Has anybody here heard of a "Viore" brand of plasma tv?
I saw this today. It's 42" and the price is $XXXX. I though to myself, "heh, not too bad a price for an ED plasma." Then I noticed the E was actually an H! A high definition plasma for XXXX bucks? It has DVI-D but no HDMI. It gets better. I played around with this thing a little bit, and all I can say is this tv has to be seen to be believed. For starters, it has almost perfect grayscale tracking. I know D6500 when I see it, and this is very close on the warm color temp setting. It has 5 selectable gamma settings, and horizontal and vertical size and position screen controls which I found odd. I don't recall it all but there's a host of advanced menu options I rarely see in a tv's user menu. Here's the icing on the cake that truly impressed me though: below the color temp menu is a color management menu that allows individual color decoder adjustments. I don't know how fine the adjustment increments are but the fact that they're in the user menu blew me away. I couldn't find out the panel resolution, but it's most likely 1,024x768. Scaling of 1080i looked pretty good too. The only drawback is what seemed to be mediocre contrast ratio overall, but the black and white levels weren't calibrated so that's not fair to say really.
What do you all think? Does anybody know who makes this? I don't mean to sound gushing, but for all that it offers (a picture free of red push and blue tint without an ISF calibration or any kind of service menu tweaking), this could be the HD plasma bargain of the year. What's everybody's thoughts?

I've only seen the very unimpressive "Ilo" and Sanyo plasmas in Wally World but I haven't been to a store in a while. It might be interesting to find out who actually makes the components for this pdp however..

The individual who began this thread (Xcalibur_255) hasn't been back to update us regarding what he saw at Wal Mart. I'm going to check out one of their super centers tonight to see what FP's they have. Unfortunately I live in the SmAlbany NY region and our big box stores don't carry the same level (or choice) of merchandise that can be found in area's like Atlanta GA. I posted up the link to Wal Mart's web site because this was the only Panasonic PDP I could find.
IMO, given the conversion to DTV and an increasing choice of HD programming (currently, I get 16 channels in HD), I don't understand why anyone would consider spending $2K on an ED-PDP anymore? In addition, with HD-PDP features like: CableCARD, tuners & HDMI and that PDP's last for 20 years, I don't understand the interest in the commercial models either? |

But where I live, the cable provider (Cox) doesn't know when or even if they will offer HD. They do digital, but I'm not gonna spring for that kind of $ unless I can get HD. |

The unit certainly exists.
Our local Wal-Mart has had this Viore 42" HD plasma on display for about a month. I don't want to violate forum rules, but it is very inexpensive for HD - under the price first mentioned above. PQ in the store looks decent but as everyone knows, this depends on so many setup and environment variables - I would say it's not quite as good as the Pioneer HD unit they were closing out just before, but again setup dependent.
In any case, the brand name & HD spec is not a mistake, hoax or anything else. I'm surprised it hasn't received more discussion than this. Joel |

Look at WalMart.com
After posting the previous message, I checked Walmart.com, and found they have quite a few interesting plasmas there. Panasonics, Tatungs, and a whole line of "preorder" Hyundais at 60", 50", 42" (HD) and 42" ED.
The Hyundai descriptions all state quite clearly that they are LG panels. The 42" HD unit is listed as 1024 x 768 and 5000:1 (stated) contrast, and is really cheap by today's market, considerably cheaper even than the Viore discussed here. The 50" is listed as 1366 x 768 and 5000:1 (stated) contrast. Inputs for these have DVI, not HDMI and no HDCP mentioned. The 60" price is in the territory of many retail store's 50" offerings. Interestingly, the search for "plasma" also produces some academic textbooks on plasma physics - not normally a hot item at Wal-Mart. I wonder who they've partnered with for their online sales site? Wow! Under $1700 for the Hyundai ED version and under $1999 for the Hyundai HD version. The HD says "Featuring the latest high-grade, high-contrast HD PDP Panel from LG"
Does anybody have more info about this. LG is semi-highly regarded around here right? Are there other items to consider besides the panel? Would the internal components be made by Hyundai or others or maybe LG as well? I have never heard of Viore (the original panel for this thread) but I've heard of Hyundai and LG. Sorry I'm not adding any new info here with this post, but I'm hopefully prod-ing some people into Investigation Mode. |

The upgrade stand mount with the green glass bottom is exactly as my buddies Daewoo 42" that he bought in jan 2004, which we all know is a NEC model.
I'm sure the pictures used are NOT what you get. A few here bought the Ed version of the Hyundai at Costco's for the same price last fall, alot were returned.............

Whoops. Sorry for never posting back in the thread. After nobody responded the first week I assumed nobody was going to.
To update those who were curious about this tv I did indeed buy one of these from Walmart. It was on clearance at the time and I got it for only $XXXX. Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to give it a testdrive yet. It's temporarily in a room with no cable access, but I have an Oppo DV971H scaling player coming in a day or so. I have been discussing this with several other owners and we have a working theory on what this tv is. We believe it is using the FJH ALiS glass panel developed by Fujitsu/Hitachi a few years ago. This tv is 1024x1024 interlaced display, and ALiS (alternate lighting of surfaces) was just a really fancy way of saying it was interlaced as well. The Fujitsu interlaced panel was also 1024x1024. Sony, Sanyo, Philips, among others have all used this glass panel. It is being produced in large volumes under multiple brand names which is why they can offer it for a lower price. The guys I've talked with who own the Viore and can watch it say it's a diamond in the rough. The one guy couldn't stop gushing about how amazing the picture quality is. I personally believe, based on the 1080i feed that was in the walmart store, that this Viore produces an HD picture on par with any plasma I've seen up to $6,000. I can give a detailed summary of my feelings on the picture quality once my dvd player arrives and I can actually watch mine a little. ![]()

I have a few pictures on my webspace here to look at also:
The last one makes the screen looked very washed out because the camera's flash was on. My cybershot has one helluva flash. ![]() http://spe.midco.net/tyrellgoetz/ima...a/DSC00009.JPG http://spe.midco.net/tyrellgoetz/ima...a/DSC00010.JPG http://spe.midco.net/tyrellgoetz/ima...a/DSC00011.JPG

Just wanted to say I bought the Viore 42" plasma today, hooked it up during lunch and all I can say is Wow! It looks great in HDTV, had to call Cox to turn on the HD for my DVR box and it was beautiful.
2 sets of SV inputs, 1 DVI, 2 component, 1 S-video, and 1 vga. Set is quite and seems to render the picture nicely. I am no audio/video pro but I know a nice picture when I see it. This coupled with the phenomenal return policy of Sam's will allow me to sleep comfortably. FYI, I found out from my brother (he is a mgr at Costco) that these stores such as Sam's and Costco have contracts with the vendor that gaurantee 100% credit for returned merchandise, thus why they have no expiration on returns. |
