And specs as well-size specifically. Also, news on PQ improvements and if grey bars are now black.

ocxplant - put that paintbrush down and plug in your TV. You need to get your priorities straight.

If anyone is curious there is a nice flash animation to illustrate the D-ILA light engine process at the link below:

ext,

That might be their previous light engine. Colorlink, whose design I believe is shown in the video, now has a newer one on their website called the CQ3. They don't show the Quad anymore.

I don't know for sure that JVC actually used the Colorlink engine, but it is a pretty good guess. The CQ3 has fewer parts, which may help explain the significantly lower MSRP for the new sets.

Of course, I could be all wrong.

Tell me about it. That's why I've been hanging around here for so long and still haven't bought THE TV.

Kid Red, When I had a SA 3250 box the side bars were gray, but when I switched to the Pace 550 box the bars are black. So would that be a setop box issue??

pepco- Yea, the JVC can't override grey bars, but some cable boxes can. Someone said in another thread that the they grey bars are now black.

Looking at the 61Z786 w/ SD. Side bars are black. I just got it up and running. I don't have DVD or HTPC hooked up yet. I'm working on that now.

kfeltes- Sounds encouraging, don't suppose you know if your STB passes black bars?

kfeltes:

Thanks for the post.

You will, of course, skip supper and work thru so that you can get things set up and report back to us, right?

I have the coax hooked directly into the TV. I have bypassed the cable box at the moment. I'll get everything hooked up tonight and post the results. It is displaying black bars on every setting I've tried. I haven't seen any grey bars so far. More to come later. I have to run out - I'll be back @ 10 - 11 PM CDT. I'll be up late messing with this beauty.

Oh, BTW - my initial impressions are....... It's very impressive. Well worth the $$$. No buyers remorse what-so-ever. More to come later.....

I'm sitting 14 feet away and It's on the JVC swivel stand. It's the perfect height.

Thats fantastic! Just what I wanted to hear. My wife is blind to things like that, but I'm sure grey bars would have drove me bonkers!

Looking forward to more first impressions.

Cheers

I'm swapping my three week old 61Z585 (Jan 2005 build) for a 61Z786 which should arrive any day now. When it does, I will post a back-to-back comparison.

I have taken photos of chromatic aberration on a DVE test pattern, which I hope will answer my own biggest question regarding whether the image quality has improved.

What stand is good to use with it? I assume the top is not deep enough for a center channel?

I just got back. It's been a long day!!! I won't be posting anything tonight. Not even the sweet new D-ILA can pull me away from nap time. Sorry everyone. More tomorrow night.

Onmitsu- cool. I will be swapping out my 3 month old 52757 for the new 52786 when it's out. So, anything you can tell me will prepare me for the same. CA is an issue, but not at viewing distances. It's mostly banding and video noise for me. I want a smoother picture with smoother color blending and I'd be much happier. Get rid of CA and I'll be a pig in shee-it.

Alan,

Since you offerred a powerbuy on this set, you obviously feel it's a good product. Have you seen the image it produces and how does it compare to tube displays?

Tnx.

That's why I really hate to think about getting it mail order.
I don't know what's worse, not having a set (any set) at all, or something like that happen.

BUT, for the more fortunate ones;
How's the black level? Are the blacks black or grey?
