Does it have the same suction loader as the 511 or a tray like the 418? Can't tell from specs on LG web site.
Can it be made region free easily? Does it have a PAL-to-NTSC converter? Can't tell from specs on LG web site. Can it play MP3s from a DVD or just from a CD? According to specs on LG web site it does DVD-Audio but as there are no 5.1ch analog outputs then it is probably via HDMI like the new Panny S52. Last edited by disgruntled1; 05-17-06 at 12:05 AM.. |

I saw this player in BB today.
On the box it states that is has a slot loader but it definitely has a tray (plugged it in, powered it up, opened the tray and put a DVD in it). Hooked it up to a TV using HDMI and put in a region-free PAL DVD. It played it just fine so that would imply that it has a PAL-to-NTSC converter like previous models. I have no idea if the player can be made region free though using publicized hacks. It definitely does not have 5.1ch analog outputs so DVD-Audio would be over HDMI like the new Panny S97. I would not expect upconverting to work over component without the hack. Last edited by disgruntled1; 05-18-06 at 08:55 PM.. |

Here's the story on this player-none of the 418 or 511 hacks except the one for the information screen work on this unit, it will upscale xvid/divx and unprotected dvds through the componet output, it has a Zoran Vadis 888 chipset, my experiance was that the 12 bit 110mhz video dacs didn't really make much of an improvment in the picture quality. It appears that it doesn't support as long of xvid/divx file names as the 511 or 418. I took it back and will continue to use both my 418 and 511. What I really want is a player that handles h.264. And it isn't a slot loader, it has a tray.

Zrdb,
The Zoran Vaddis is the same chipset line that Samsung has used for years, since it has the "ZoranZoom" feature which I believe Samsung's EZ-View feature makes use of. I really want something like EZ-View, but have been disappointed in Samsungs DVD players otherwise. I would really like to know if LG made use of this feature of the Vadis 888. Did you happen to check the DN191H to see if it can zoom to get rid of the black bars above and below a 2.39:1 movie, but still maintain image quality? I tried downloading the manual from LG's website, but none of their DVD player manuals will download for me. (very weird). Thanks! Mofongo |

To be honest I use my LDA-511 and 418 primarily for xvid/divx which is where they excell, I use my 85 for most of my regular dvd watching because it'll play just about any thing that you can load in it, it has a really nice picture on my 27" crt hdtv, it'll play every home made dvd that I've put in it. Don't get me wrong-both of the LG's are excellent players-they display upscaled avi excellently.

Thanks! Another quick questions (sorry to keep asking, but if LG would put a manual on their #!#!@ website, then I could look this up myself).
I just got my Samsung DVD-HD960 (1080p output) in the mail today. It does a really good job except with "mosquito noise". It has a noise filter setting, but it still does not seem to tackle the noise as well as my laptop can with ffdshow filters. I know that the Sony has settings for two different kinds of noise (mosquito and something else). Do you remember what kinds of settings the DN191H had for noise reduction? Thanks again! Mofongo |

I tossed a region-free PAL DVD into an LG191 at BB and it played it just fine.
Edit: Oops, never mind, looks like this thread drifted into discussion of Sony players (which don't do PAL). ![]() Last edited by disgruntled1; 05-26-06 at 12:39 AM.. |

Owned one for 24 hours; a preliminary report
Quote:
Pros: *good color balance *fairly sharp at 1080i through the component outputs (I don't know why it would be given the ED's native resolution is lower than that) *good sound in the simulated surround mode (it's in a 2 channel system) *easy to use remote *cheap to buy Cons: *cheap loading tray *cheap remote *image seems slightly dark on some movies |

For those of you who've used this player, can you answer a few questions?
I have a player with the previous version of the upscaling Zoran chip (the 778, I think), and it is capable of playing Nero Digital MP4 files with standard profile. Can this player do that? Do .mp4 files even appear in the file browser? Also, since the previous version of the chip properly handled divx/xvid aspect ratios correctly, I'm guessing this one does too, but if someone would confirm this for me that would be great. Does this new chip play DivX 6 ultra features like menus and chapter stops (not really necessary for me, just curious). Also, when playing commercial DVDs using HDMI and 1080i or 720p resolutions, does it pillarbox 4:3 material or stretch it on a widescreen TV? My current player stretches the image and it is incredibly annoying. Thanks for your help... Julie |

On the other thread it mentioned that Disney discs are protected, so I'll give that a try. |

I'm thinking of buying this DVD player tomorrow. I just saw it at BB today and it's on sale so I figured I'd give LG a shot. I'm not a videophile, not in the least, but I do want a smooth picture on my 5067w.
I plan on connecting it via HDMI cable and hooking my STB up via components since my box outputs 720p over either component or HDMI. I'll post my impressions of it tomorrow evening but I doubt it plays protected disks via component even though it has 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i written right under the component output. I'll let you guys know. |

I'm still getting this player tomorrow, tho, and I hope to find some hacks for it. I doubt the 511 hacks work (I believe someone posted they didn't) so I'll have to keep my ear to the ground and try and find someone who knows the hacks for this model. |

Well, I've only had it hooked up for about an hour but I really like this player. It's connected over HDMI at 720p (I couldn't see a difference between 720p and 1080i so I left it on the HL-R5067w's native resolution).
The PQ is really good; much better so than my old Panasonic (it was about 5 years old and wasn't even progressive scan, tho). The sound is so-so, but I'm not complaining. I have not connected it to my receiver yet so I don't know if it will have lip-sync issues. I'll test that out when I get a digital coax cable (I somehow broke mine). I'd give the player 4 out of 5 stars and, for the price, you can't really beat it. |

Does this DVD player have an option to pillar-box (Normal mode) 4:3 content at the DVD end to accomodate the case whereby your TV won't let you choose Normal mode when sending 720p or 1080i over HDMI? Unfortunately the manual is not yet available on the LG web site so I can't RTFM to get the answer.

I guess nobody's figured out any hacks for this player yet.
I've done Google searches but I cannot find anything. I know that LG is a rebranded something else (maybe Zenith???) so if anyone knows maybe we can find some hacks for the player it's rebranded from. I'm not an expert on this, far from it, but I'd like to customize my player with a few hacks if they're available. Anywho, I hope someone finds some soon. |
