Harmony and ViewSonic N3760w

I would appreciate some feedback on using a Harmony remote with the ViewSonic N3760 37" HDTV. In particular, I'm wondering about whether a Harmony remote can adequately control input switching on the ViewSonic. Reading the ViewSonic manual, it seems that input switching is accomplished on the remote either with one button, moving sequentially through the inputs, or by diving into menus--there are not discrete buttons for particular inputs. So, how does a Harmony remote deal with this kind of switching, if there is no feedback on where the TV is in the sequence of button pushes?

I hope the question makes sense. Any guidance would be great, as I am close to purchasing both the ViewSonic and a Harmony remote, and want to avoid any unforseen "gotchas."

Well, I bought the ViewSonic N3760w and a Harmony 550 remote, and after a couple of days of trial and error I was able to make input switching work 90% correctly. (Which is great, because I really need the Harmony, since ViewSonic provided no remote codes for use with other manfacturers, meaning my Sony DVD/VHS remote cannot control the TV.)

My setup:
I have a VHS deck on the AV1 input, HD cable on the HD1 input, and a DVD player on the HD2 input. (It's actually a combo VHS/DVD deck with separate outputs.)

I think the problem that most people have switching inputs with a Harmony and the ViewSonic is that the ViewSonic has a little bit of all kinds of input-switching methods. You can switch via menus and arrows, or by scrolling up and down in a list, or by input buttons. Input buttons are the most precise method, but ViewSonic cheated: The TV button on the remote goes to the ViewSonic's tuner only, but the AV, HD and HMI buttons each go to *two* inputs, toggling between the two:

AV button = AV1 and AV2 in succession
HD button = HD1 and HD2 in succession
HDMI button = PC and HDMI in succsession

If for instance, you press the HD button twice to get to HD2, then press the AV button, then press the HD button again, you will be back on HD1. But if you have the TV set to HD2 and turn it off, when you turn it on again, it will still be on HD2, but an HD button press will get you back to HD1.

You can see why the Harmony gets a little confused.

So, after trying a lot of different things, I told the Harmony that I had discrete buttons for each input, even though that's only half true. So now, if I turn the TV on and select "watch TV/PVR," I get the right input (HD1, where I connected the cable). If I then choose "watch DVD", I again get the correct input, because the HD button command switches to HD2. If I then switch to "watch tape," the Harmony correctly switches to AV1.

This is where it gets tricky though. If I then go from "watch tape" back to "watch DVD" the ViewSonic switches to the HD1 cable input instead of the HD2 DVD input, because it always goes back to the first of the two.

My solution to this problem was to create a custom button in both the "watch TV/PVR" and "watch DVD" activities, labeled, "Swap TV/DVD." This button simply sends the HD command again so that whichever HD input was on, I get the other. If the input was wrong after entering the activity, this fixes it in one step.

It's the most elegant way I can figure to handle the problem for my configuration. Your mileage may vary.

I also do not allow the Harmony to power on or off any of my equipment. This is because the Motorola HD/PVR box malfunctions if you ever turn it off, and doesn't get the updates Comcast sends in the middle of the night; and because I'd rather turn the rest of the equipment on and off without the remote than have to deal with power-switching Harmony issues.

To make it fool proof you could make your own semi-discretes.

eg for HD2, send "AV", then "HD" twice
for AV1 send "HD", then "AV"
etc

this should ensure it always goes to the right input, even from OFF.

Thank you for the suggestion, czzer, I will consider it. I'd have to figure out how to make a macro the Harmony way, since that is essentially what would be happening. I would be a little concerned about how quickly the macro would cycle to the correct input, and whether that would be confusing to an unsuspecting guest/S.O. There might be some other unintended consequences I'd have to think through, as well.

You would do it through the "Adjust Inputs" menu. Select "I go directly to the input I want", then when it asks for the command for each input, select "Send more commands" and select all required commands from the drop down boxes.

I would think this would be less confusing to a guest, as it wouldn't require pressing any extra buttons when changing activities.

Since I posted at length about my interim solution, I wanted to mention that I did follow czzer's advice and set up the input switching as he recommended, and it does work. Thank you, czzer!

The big caveat is that I have to keep the remote aimed at my equipment for 30-45 seconds for it to make 2 or 3 switches to get to the input I want. So I have to make anyone who'll be using the remote aware of that.

Phooey on ViewSonic for messing up a very nice TV with poorly implemented remote input switching.

Heya, can you state where these delays are located and your best recommendations for them? I'm assuming they're in the 99-1 menu, however I have not played with it much to recall all the specifics.

There's a sticky at the top of this forum. I'm not sure what your exact setup is, but the default Harmony settings are very conservative when it comes to delays and repeats.

I think he was referring to the delays configured through the Harmony Remote website. However, I haven't been able to adjust those delays satisfactorily for operation with the ViewSonic (which I think is the ViewSonic's fault and not the Harmony's), hence the 30-45 seconds of wait time on certain activity/input switches/cycles. If there's a way to affect the remote control delays through the ViewSonic's 991 menu, I'm all ears.

I have the same TV and am wondering what you set for the delays as well as the number of repeats?

I haven't been able to get the harmony to work the viewsonic as well as the original remote.
