Athena AS-P400 vs AS-P4000
I have read through all the threads I can find on these subs and from what I can tell people feel the AS-P400 was built better and sounds a bit better. But with the 4000 was the port noise reduced some? I have a 400 that has quite a bit of port noise when you get under 30hz.

I've got both, each on different budget systems with Point5s. For the price I think they are both a bargan. The only real difference I've found so far is my 4000 had issues with my hardwood floor due to the down firing port. Rather than work on floor treatment of some kind I found the 400 new on ebay and moved the 4000 to my other system in a room with carpet. As far as prefering one over the other it's a toss up for me, lot's of people here prefer the 400 though.

So you don't notice any difference it port noise? Doesn't the 4000 have 2 rear ports and therefore more port area? If so, my thoughts are this will reduce the port noise that I am hearing below 30hz on the 400 as compared to the 4000.

The 4000 has 2 ports, one on the front and one on the bottom, noone in the back. I haven't encounted any problems with them other than the conflict between the 4000 and the hardwood floor but I've got everything leveled and don't try to shake the foundation with them eather. I did notice some at extreamly high volumes with music, wasn't that bad tho, before I leveled everything with a RS Meter. I found out I was running my subs extreamly to hot.

Get one more 400 for about $250 Get two 4000's since I can find them a bit cheaper, total about $370. I would do this if the 4000's have less port noise. But I like my 400 and a lot of people say the 400 is better. Or if I'm going to buy 2 subs, why not get two 6000's. That pushes me over $500 and more than I was going to spend. Will the 6000 sound as good as my 400, just louder and lower? I listen to a lot of concert DVDs and music and the 400 is very musical. Will this be the case if I move up to the 6000? That's my dilema..... Last edited by primetimeguy; 08-12-06 at 02:23 PM.. |

Not sure, could it just be they are out at the moment? You can find them everywhere else. |

I'm beginning to think that Athena is coming out with a new line of subs. Audioadvisor doesn't even list the 4000 or 6000 anymore. I think they're sold out and not expecting more. If they were simply out and waiting more, they'd still list them and show them as back ordered. The 400 listing might just be them helping Athena get rid of some old stock. |

Just a quick note, that in Canada, Future Shop has dropped the price quite substantially on the whole line of athena speakers. They were offering the P-400 for $199 CAN, but no longer seem to have it. They have the P-300 for $169 CAN though.
They sell the AS-P4000 for $399 and no longer sell the 6000 (I bought one in December for $399, regularly $549). From what I remember of the first Audition line, I think athena is getting rid of old stock and getting ready to come out with an updated line, probably new subs as well. As far as port noise, my 6000 hasn't any that I can discern and I play it as loud as I can comfortably handle. |

Over in the Athena Owners Thread I found this....
"As the sales manager of an independent retailer, who has sold Athena since the original SCT series, I can tell you that Athena is just fine. API has kept this line-up pretty small only releasing the updated AS-x.2 series (change of woofer and tweeter trim color to silver) and the WS series in the past year or so. This year we will see some minor changes as well. The AS-B2.2, the F1.2, and the AS-P6000 are going away (in fact, my rep told me this past week that the P6000 is already sold out). The WS series is changing color from silver to black aluminum. The in-wall/ceiling line may not last the year unless API sees a major purchasing commitment from a box box retailer. The Micra-6 will only be offered as a 5.1 HTiB which explains the individual packs being sold out through Target. Athena plans to introduce at least a couple new models probably serving as replacements for the B2.2 and F1.2. All I have been told is that there will be a new bookshelf model this year accompanied by a dual 6.5" tower. Too soon to tell if they will be inserted into the Audition series or if they will be the foundation of a new line-up. So, once all the changes are done, API is still planning on keeping the Athena brand a small tightly-focused line, and I'm sure they'll be around for some time to come (with or without BB). At least I hope they're not going anywhere because it has been a great line to sell over the past 6 years." No mention of the 400 or 4000 but eliminating the 6000. Maybe that is a sign they will be coming out with a new 10" design. |

Athena subs
I have been exchanging emails with the Athena product manager in Canada. The 4000 is now 4100 with just a cosmetic change. The 6000 has been dropped since there has not been a big demand on 12 inch subs. I was able to get mine from AudioAdvisors. Most retailers do not carry the 6000 anymore. I think the 6000 is best for larger rooms. The 6000 will "walk" on hardwood floors which I experienced during the breakin period.
