LiteOn HD-A970GX
Anyone know any more about this? TiVO S3 competitor (or at least Sony HDD250 competitor)? I'm interested if the price is right.
LITE-ON IT Introduces New-Generation HDD/DVD Recorders with HDMI Output Taipei (Taiwan), October 16, 2006–Lite-On IT Corporation (TWE: 8008), the world’s leading optical drive supplier, today announced the launch of its new-generation HDD/DVD recorder, the HD-A970GX, in a move to respond to the growing popularity of high-definition video market and to demonstrate its continuing endeavors in the consumer electronics segment. Built on the innovative technology of the HD-A740 760 series, HD-A970GX delivers a much improved home entertainment experience with upgraded functions and new designs. Enjoy the High-Definition World With an advanced HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) output, HD-A970GX offers you hassle-free connection to the new-generation HDTV or HD-ready TV set with a single HDMI cable. Meanwhile, to bridge the current gap between the lower-resolution analog signals and the expanded display capability of HDTV, the HD-A970GX incorporates a video upscaler to enhance the source picture resolution up to 1080p (Progressive mode). This conversion process allows users to enjoy improved, near high-definition images. 320GB Massive Hard Drive HD-A970GX is equipped with a massive 320GB hard drive, ideal for long-hour or instant recording. In SLP mode, the unit can record up to 413 hours of videos. DivX® Video Playback HD-A970GX supports the popular DivX® file format, allowing users to watch these digital files not only on PCs but also on TV! User-Friendly Interfaces As with its predecessors, HD-A970GX comes with the intutitive Easy Guider™ menu, guiding users to complete basic functions step by step. For this new model, Lite-On IT also introduced a newly-developed Easy Setup process to help users quickly set up the recorder for the first time. An all-in-one model in design and features, HD-A970GX brings you flexibility and functionality in home video recording. |

The problem is that they don't indicate that they have either an ATSC or QAM HD tuner ... maybe they do have one, but the fact that they don't mention it is pretty suspicious. It certainly doesn't have a cable card.
It sounds like an up scaling DVD recorder with a hard drive and an analog tuner to me - not a competitor to a Tivo or a Sony HD DVR. |
