So is it safe to say my PB13 Ultra will love or hate this movie?

The problem with the Cloverfield bass is that it is so constant you get used to it. It's like the Playboy Mansion of bass.

The movie was just okay for me... too much shaky-cam, but it was fun to watch once.

There's definitely some truth to that.

I think my favorite scene is the scene where the tank pulls up and starts firing. When the monster takes that one step I could feel the floor flex. I also like the part just after that where they are in the sub way tunnel. It really makes you feel like your there.

OK thanks, I will have to rent this again. I was hoping there was low stuff because I know it was loud. I would put this on par with WOTW.

Or turn up your bass 2 db's, but I don't think this movie needs it. Transformers(to me) was recorded normal but to get levels like WOTW you can turn it up 5 db's(master volume) and watch Transformers come alive like the other movies. The matrix reloaded is the same way.

Watched Eragon (SD DVD). Very impressive bass in that movie...especially when Eragon first touches the baby dragon, I swear my hair blew at that scene.

My thoughts exactly! This is a very impressive DD release. WOTW is still my all time favorite LFE track (DTS - the storm and Pod emergence scenes) but this comes in a close second. I wonder what audio tracks they will put on the Blu-ray release.

Funny thing... I told my wife that I would be watching Cloverfield instead of AVP:Requeim because I knew that AVP:Requeim had a DTS track and I was getting a late start watching and wanted to crank it up. My JLAudio Fathom is pretty "neighbor unfriendly" for late night movie watching. Oooops... Fortunately, no dirty looks from the neighbors the following morning.

I took my spl meter out and measured the heavy bass filed monster scenes in Cloverfield. at the seating position. ( By the way the camera movement was driving me nutz!) My system is calibrated at reference, but since I'm using two subs, I'm running about 6db hot. The average reading was around 97db. There was no cuffing or audible distortion, and unlike the movie Loaded there weren't any noticable room rattles to speak of.

I gave a re-listen to several scenes at a level which hit peaks of 110db at listening position. That's a lot of fun. It's not that tough on the ears, shakes the room a bit, and feels kind of cool.

I might wait for the Blu-Ray and uncompressed audio before I do cloverfield...

Any idea when that might be?

(Well really I have to wait til June and the release of the pioneer 1018 anyways)

I'm not kidding. Most of what makes up that db reading is the bass and bass is not that harsh to the ear. The LFE on soundtracks is mixed about 10db hot. If the subs were turned off, the rest of the sound would most likely only be hitting about 100db.

Now if loud music was hitting 110 db peaks, it would seem very loud and rough on the ears.

REFERENCE Volume for speakers is 105db....bass is 115db.

I agree that if the mains and center are hitting 100db it is really really loud!

But to me bass 110-120db is nothing....even though technially it can cause hearing damage But nothing beats the 115db ass shaking, room shaking explosions!

True. But, even if you are running your sub a bit hot and your reading 110db, your over all volume would probably be around 100db, which we both agree is very loud, and much too loud for me, personaly.

I do have a question for you, Ian. For your location you have "Springsteen Country". Can I assume you have actually seen Springsteen performing up close and personal? How loud would you suppose that was? Probably loud enough to blow your hair back!

I have seen Bruce at the Stone Pony but not recently. Don't get me wrong, I love good clean bass, and as you know I've spent plenty of time on this forum contributing. However, after spending over five years day in and day out in the car audio industry, all that real loud stuff, even if it's accurate, is no longer a novelty for me. Check out Loaded. The bass offers a lot of impact, and unlike Cloverfield even at my moderate listening levels, it shook things up for me.

Reference is 85. 105 and 115 are the peaks.

For those looking for Cloverfield on BR, it is announced for early June.

Thanks shane....that is kind of what I meant.

When an action scene is reaching 105db out of my mains it is soooo loud.

I like to keep the loud scenes at about 100db mains, BUT I want the sub giving me every single db I can get!

ps....where did you see the Cloverfield Blu-Ray info at?

If you where to have a friend grab hold of you and started shaking you! How many db is it going to produce! Now then! If I was observing from a few feet away how many db would I be hearing and feeling while you shake your friend!?

When travelling on the London Tube Underground just recently (20th April 2008) I noted the SPL db level was around 90dbc with a less level at dba that changed in pitch while moving though the tube and bends on the tracks and tunnel itself with the air movement changing values in the frequency response.

Again I could feel lots of vibration and jolt, without the 115dbc of LFE.1 which is a little unrealistic at times, now then.

I think shakers can add the a mild vibration not at the seat position, but throughout the whole room that should have raised flooring over the original and lots and lots and lots of bass shakers not to be used to overwhelm the six-track Dolby stereo digital mix, but to mealy accompany it with a mild LFE.1 sub bass level. So if you where seated or standing you should still get the same event anywhere in the room as much as possible.

Continuous loudness will Bugger your ears right up! So don’t play too loud use some judgment and reduce the level by a few db, I bet if tests where conducted, I’d say several family and friends where say you played that one too frigging loud!

Well you should have been over here when Cloverfield played at the Empire Leicester Square screen 1. I was told it was just bloody loud and I can believe that. I should have gone along to see it with my SPL db meter, damn!

LOL I think Iron Man (2008) is playing at the Odeon Leicester Square and think there shy under 56KW and don’t carry THX certification. And isn’t that a Universal realise? “Nim's Island” (2008) is playing in digital presentation THX this week.

May 9th Speed Racer in digital THX! I doubt I’ll go up again until May 22nd and catch Indy at the Odeon and then some Speed Racer, it depends on the money side and if I’m feeling a good mood because the cinema chains in the UK now are messed up with the wrong studio films going to the wrong cinemas, I prefer the way it was when all Paramount and Universal pictures went to the Empire and all Warner titles to VUE formally Warner Village and all Fox Columbia titles to the Odeon.

Its messed up big time now!
