Just bought a ML Dynamo sub

Taking advantage of the BF deal at Magnolia, I bought a ML Dynamo sub this morning. I am listening to it right now. For a tiny sub, it puts out an amazing amount of power. I have the volume level set at 5 (out of 10). It puts my current sub ( Polk Audio PSW350 ) to shame. It plays faster, cleaner and louder. I will watch some movies later on. So far I am very pleased.

They had some nice stuff for 50% off. I bought from them at the previous BF too. Yeah, there were no lines. I was in and out in less than five minutes.

Just a little a update. ML suggests a 50 hrs break-in. Maybe it's just in my head, but I think it sounds better already at 15 hours . I have been listening to old songs with lots of acoustic bass. This sub delivers in spades. I imagine the more expensive ML subs kick ass big time. Magnolia still has it on sale for just a little more than I paid. Suddenly my BF deal isn't so special anymore . There is one issue with this sub. The auto-on function does not kick in if the input signal is not loud. Basically, if it doesn't dectect a low frequency signal it will shut down. It's very annoying. I returned a nice MK sub before for this same problem. My 5-year Polk Audio sub does not have this problem. It stays on as long as there is a signal -- loud or soft; low or high.

Just paly with your settings on your receiver and the gain on the sub to up the signal to the sub. If you surrently run your sub setting at -5, up it 0 or even more--simultaneously lowering the gain on your sub. Many subs have this little quirk and this seems to fix about 99% of them. Good luck.

Thanks, bsheldon. I played with different settings, but it didn't help much. I don't want to turn the setting on the receiver too high because I read somewhere you can send distorted sound to your sub if you set it too high. Normal listening is fine. It only affects night listening when I need to keep the volume low. The sub's flexibility really comes in handy. I had it in a down-firing position for the first day. It played loud but little muddy, which fine for movies. The explosions in U-571 shook my entire room, even at moderate volume. For music, I prefer to have it in the front-firing position. It's not as loud but cleaner. Now you know there is at least one person who thinks there is a difference between down-firing and front-firing.

2 dynamos?

I have the MartinLogan Fresco's in my theatre room as the LCR and DevTechs in the back. My reciever is a Marantz sr5400. The room size is 13X24 and I was looking at either a SVS-pb12plus (899), SVS-sb12plus (699) or velodyne dd-10 (1600)---humm not! Some other velodyne like spl-1200 (960)
However, after listening to the dynamo in the showroom with the exact speakers that I have. I was very impressed with it.
I now am thinking of getting 2 dynamos (total about 800) and I have a BB gift certificate for about $250 which would get the costs down. Guys? What do you think?

Thanks Rocky1! I forgot about the gratto, but I think it costs 1100.00..but I'm not sure. With the sale and my reward certificates I can be at about 500.00 total for both of the dynamos. When I go back I will audition the gratto. What are the dimensions of your room and what are your front speakers, if you don't mind my asking.

Changed my mind and purchased the Abyss instead of the two Dynamos. They won't have the sub until Tuesday. I will update after I install it.
ATLEER Magnolia has the Dynamo for 399.

Did you by chance make a comparison between the abyss and the grotto?

Quick question on this ML sub pricing..

Was this a sale or standard pricing? I was just at Magnolia HT (Best Buy) the other day and they were charging list for the Dynamo and Abyss.

How often does Tweeter/ML/Magnolia put ML speakers on sale?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I bought mine at a sale price. Yes, they have sales often. I wouldn't pay list price for any B&M product. I wouldn't pay any more than what I paid for the Dynamo. AV123 often has b-stock UFW-10s for $425. The specs on this sub look much better than that of the ML Dynamo/Abyss subs.

Agreed. I don't pay list either. The only two places in my area that carry ML are tweeter and Magnolia HT. I have dealt with tweeter before and they are a pain in the behind to get movement on pricing. I have never delt with Magnolia HT as they are new in my area. I was hoping to walk in and use this cash burning a hole in my pocket without the hassle.

How is that Dynamo treating you?

Thanks for responding.

I like it very much. It is smooth and accurate. It also dispels the myth that a sub has to be big and ported for home theater use. Here is what Sound & Vision had to say about it:

http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/spe...tem-page2.html

This is not a review of the Dynamo; it's a review of a speaker system that included a Dynamo.

Magnolia sales people in my area (Oregon) will often deal if you are a repeat customer or if you are buying multiple items (or if you just ask what is the best price they can give you).

Any comparisions with Grottos? That is my sub and I want to know whether to go with a Dynamo as a pair or another brand (Grotto has sub out)?

makes sense, the Grotto has increased in price by 200 since I got mine. Perhaps I should just save and get a Descent or a Depth...

thanks.

Its approx 12 x 36 x 8. The problem is that the Grotto doesn't distribute bass evenly by itself. Its either too intense at one end of the room and not enough at the other. The HT room continues to a wetbar and to its side a rec room. No separating walls. I will eventually close the HT room to the bar/rec area. That may solve the problem but I can always use a nice sub.

that is my conclusion as well. I may just bite the bullet and get another Grotto, but a part of me just feels like its worth it to wait 2 years and redo the room properly and get a really nice sub like a Descent or something JL maybe (though the Descent is awesome).

The Grotto, as far as I can tell, has proven to be exceptional. I would really like to hear how it performs compared to other subs considering how much Hsu and SVS get talked up here. I haven't heard one of those and to my ears M-L was easily the best in my area available to me. As previously noted, the Descent crushed anything I had heard and packed 800 W RMS power. That's a fun sub. Comparisons to others would be appreciated based on that sub vs. something else.

I'd like to get a Dynamo, too. But the $600 price is a bit more than I'm willing to pay. I see others mentioned they picked it up on sale from BB/Magnolia. My closest Magnolia equipped BB is about 45 min away so I really don't want to be driving by frequently just to see if the Dynamo is on sale. I've been watching the BB website for the past couple months, but the Dynamo price has never budged there.

Any advice on finding it on sale?

FWIW, I'm limited to a 15"x15" footprint and less than $500. The SVS SB12-Plus is also on my "just out of reach" list. Any other suggestions for "plan-B" subs?

- Jasen.
