Motorola box handshaking with TV - problems with HDMI??

Here is the problem:

I have my Motorola Digital DVR Cable Box hooked up to my Olevia LT42HVI via the HDMI connections. My system has been set up and working great for 6 months until last week. In my setup I have my cable box set so the power is never turned off when I turn off the entire home theater. However, now when I turn the TV off and then back on, the picture is gone (sound is ok through my receiver). The TV is a fuzzy gray color, but the TV does not give the error message "No Signal" and assumes it is receiving a good video signal. When in this state, if I turn the Cable box power off and then on again, the picture comes in fine. The only time I have this problem is if I turn off the power to the TV as if there is a handshake problem??? The TV has two HDMI inputs and when I move the cable to the other HDMI input, the problem still occurs. I do not experience this problem with my Oppo DVD player connection via DVI to HDMI. Could this be an HDCP problem?

Can someone shed some light on this situation. Do I have a Cable Box problem or do I have a TV problem??? Unfortunately, I do not have another digital TV to trouble shoot with.

Does Comcast need to send a refresh signal?

Thanks for the help,

Derek

Mine developed the same problem a few weeks ago. Apparently Comcast has recently pushed out a firmware upgrade that effectively killed HDMI, as you have noticed. There's not much we can do now but wait for a fix, and/or switch to component cables for the time being.

Will switching to a 6412 with DVI fix the problem?

My current solution is to create a macro with my remote that cycles the power off and then on again during power up. This works. The only things that this solution will affect are any programs that may be recording at that time and all the memory for the channel that it is currently set to.

Anyone have any new information on this topic? Has anyone else had this problem? How about a solution better than remote macros?

I too have a Comcast DVR and currently run HDMI to Sharp Aquos and digital optical to Onkyo 674, I'd like to run HDMI to Onkyo receiver, do away with the digital optical cable, and utilize the HDMI cable I already have going from the Onkyo to the Sharps to deliver my DVD video/audio signals. That's why we got HDMI isn't it?

Is it possible to call Comcast and get a "special" DVR equipped to allow this pass through or is any firmware down load available at this point? (not that I'd know how to deliver the firmware upgrade to the cable box...I assume Comcast would do this remotely by sending the firmware signal over the coax cable.

It is a known issue that the Moto boxes have issues allowing HDMI repeaters, which it views a receiver as.

Comcast controls pushing out the firmware from the local headend, so there's nothing anyone can do to avoid the firmware version they want you to use in your area.

You'll just have to wait until a firmware release fixes the HDCP handshake issues, or until the Panasonic, or Moto boxes with Tivo software, are available.

If you have firmware 16.20, you could try switching the HDMI output to DVI mode and see what happens. If you lose the video connection, you may need to use the LED display on the cable box, or a video connection through other cables, to reset it to HDMI output.

I will attempt to adjust the settings you referred to in the link.

Keep in mind, in my setup there is no receiver. I am going directly to the TV. I am aware of the repeater issue you described but that is not the problem that I am having.

I have the same problem between my Moto DCT6500/2005 non-DVR box and Sammy HL-R6768W. The STB will display "DU 1" on the front panel when it recognizes (authenticates) the Sammy's HDMI input. This STB uses DVI output.

I don't get a green screen like the other displays, but instead a very weird "quad" display - like showing a picture-in-picture of 4 views, each with the same channel. Sound is OK.

The fix is to simply switch to another channel and back. You don't need to disconnect anything. Just hit "Last" channel twice.
