AM radio through a Mirage S-12

I live less than 1/4 mile from an AM radio tower.

I'm picking up AM 6.10 through my Mirage S-12. Very low level but you can hear it if the sub is powered up and the cable is connected -- disconnect the cable and no AM radio.

I tried a "cheap" mono rca cable, a radio shack gold series mono audio cable and a Sony digital cable (digital coaxial).

All of them produced the same results.

Is there a certain type of shielding I should be looking for in a cable?

Thanks -- Bob

Bob,

Not sure if this will help you or not but I had the same problem with my Paradigm servo 15 sub. My dealer installed a choke somewhere in the input side of the amp and this solved the problem. He said they had to do the same thing with some of their Definitive subs as well. You might ask your dealer about a solution.

Regards,

Dennis

Thanks for the tip --

I've noticed if that I change the phase from 0 to 180 it stops. I'll try it like this for now and see what happens --

Thanks for the input --

Wow...I was hoping that I found someone else with the same problem. I was a little scared posting on here that my sub was picking up AM radio!! I was sure I'd get laughed at.

I never had the problem until I recently installed my Onkyo TX-SR674. I never noticed it on my older Onkyo TX-SV535.

My sub is a custom built enclosure with a Kicker 18 inch powered by a Rythmik Audio A350-Basic amp.

The sub works and sounds GREAT...except that it sounds like I'm hearing my neighbor's AM radio through the wall....in fact, that's what I thought it was for a few days!!!

There is no 60hz hum...but I will try and plug the sub into the same outlet as the receiver. I will also play with the phase.

Any other thoughts on this?

Add a choke, clamp a ferrite core around the cables.

Cool, thanks for the help.

I'm assuming that since it happens when the RCA line in into the sub amp is connected, I should put the ferrite choke around the RCA cable? (sw line level)

Check this out...I'f found that the AM radio comes over the Subwoofer only when I have my zone 2 speakers connected to my Onkyo. These are outside in front of my deck. I got a few chokes so I'll play around with them on the zone 2 speaker wires.

Lesson learned, unplug everything and re-add items one by one until you hear the interferance.
