Set your digital camera to night scene mode, turn off flash, delay for 2 seconds after setting it on top of a tripod.

Also set it to the highest quality setting, that way after cropping you can post a bigger picture while retaining most of the details.

yep thats how you do it, a fellow CRT guy helped me figure this stuff out, I am so behind in dig cam's, I couldn't take a picture for **** 2 days ago

It's pretty hard to show HD detail in an image the size of a postcard. Some ffdshow resizing and sharpening could produce similar results. I'm not saying the pictures aren't cool but it's like comparing them from across the room.

I agree, I am gonna do a comparison later today and not tell which picture is which, we'll see how that goes, maybe my overall thoughts on screenshots will be proved wrong

the level of detail and sharpness of lines like the building for example give it away to me

I have a BHD superbit import from Japan, one of the best DVD's ever in my book, I will put those up soon

I CLEARLY see the difference between hd and sd screenshots. The background detail on shots with depth of field are the giveaway that its hd. SD dvd upconverts just cant achieve this. I see this in all the posted shots where the comparison is made on the same equipment. There is no question BD is worth it on all but the very worst transfers from cruddy masters where all the flaws of the source are seen. Looking forward to your compo shots Gary.

It's a screenshot fest!!!!! I'm going to have to tweak out my puppy so I can show what it's really capable of.

The gamma bump Moome's new card does for my blacks is incredible. Black is black as black. Even though my screen is 16:9, you sure cant tell once the lights are off and a movie is playing. I have never seen CRT look so good.

Yes Cliff very nice, I am jealous of that HDMI, I am trying to get Moome to make a direct input 10-bit HDMI card for the XG, it would be a big seller for him

I was able to improve my gamma with the adjustment on the VP50, which is gonna get even better down the road, nothing like a CRT and proper Gamma

most folks say that CRT achieves it's perfect blacks by crushing details in them, not the case at all

first up is a Fifth Element comparison between DVD and BR(try and guess), all these are from the Samsung BR(DVD via Yamaha CX1 SDI):

Love this. It has given me reason for more thought on my Blu ray player.
I watched Kingdom of Heaven last night. I would say the picture quality is
5-10% better than my old dvd player. Could this player be defective?
I watched Windtalkers on BD and on HDnet. The picture was the same.
But still not amazing like Discovery hd or Espn hd. Any thoughts?

....the details I noticed immediately:




The jaggies and stepping are gone at the claw shaddows, line between snow/sky is more defined.



Fine details in fur show up in the BR,
sharp black line between eyelid and eyeball, no stepping around iris.



Again more fur detail, cracks in nose are more visible (looks life-like in full size in person)
...also a small ripple in the snow where both front fangs penetrate, not visible in SD

However, in person when sitting 6' away from my 50" PDP-5070HD, Scratts face is about 4x what I'm showing here,
and the image is also at full res (level 10) vs being saved at level 3 for web display.

...also take into account My PDP is also downscaling the 1080p signal to 768p

I imagine the difference between SD DVD and BR is greater on a 1080p Display

It's nearly impossible to accurately re-create the first hand experience
with a cheap camera, and little or no photography skills.

*All I did was tune the sharpness up +1 in photoshop for lost detail due to bad camera (and photographer) <my bad>
but all photos, regardless of format were adjusted equally.

My point was in shots with depth of field that has background in focus many of the fine details are clearly seen with the bd transfer compared to sd where these details are fuzzy.

my comparisoon before:

Fifth Element BR is the 2nd shot, the top is bluer and has bad ringing, that is the DVD, look at the noise in the sky on the DVD shot "Zorg", BR looks much better and in person the difference is sweet

nice shots there dude, don't add anything to the image, just straight pics, just resize and save with a nice jpeg compressor(photoshop for example), the sharpening ruins them for me as they would look so much better without it, here is a few more for my homies, I got a tripod last night so they have improved even more, all these are Fifth Element BR:
