8 minute clip, and yet only two static screenshots of the interface... It seems like D-Link couldn't get the 750 to run either

(the clip is from november, so the product was clearly not released by then)

[quote=TheGrimRipper;13605416]I must say that D-Link is a consistent example of a poor support organization. For comparison, I recently purchased an Oppo DVD player and I am always amazed by that company's support. Within days of the player's release, Oppo was already working on firmware updates to correct issues, and willingly sent out those updates to folks who requested them. Their support folks were well-informed and knowledgeable, and their phones WORKED!!!

vTuner is responsive and helpful. ORB is great (and is still in beta!). Twonkyvision is in the middle - they reply, but are unclear and incomplete (perhaps due to language issues). TVersity is a fine product, but support is totally lacking (and they are in beta as well). Microsoft often answers the phone (from God knows where) and suggests you reinstall whatever program is causing you trouble. Bottom liine -- great support is wonderful, but rare, unfortunately.

Still no reply from D-link!

Isn't this surprising?

Very true, most times I would settle for minimally competent support, but even that is getting harder to find...

To those who are sticking with the DSM-750, you WILL get to some good support folks at Level III if you are persistent enough.

When I was troubleshooting my 520, I got to them after several days of effort and, eventually the problem I reported was fixed (after a year's wait). I just don't have the time to go through the process anymore so I will watch and wait.

Ha ha ha!

Well, I got a reply from D-link. And as someone else said in this thread, they referred me to live support!!!! ARRRRGG

This is crazy. I don't know if I'll have enough patience to be on the phone for hours again.

After talking to a gazillion representative in the Philippines and elsewhere, I am finally going to talk to a competent person....

Cross your fingers guys !

Good news and Bad news!

I finally got to speak to a level 3 product specialist.

The good news is: This can be fixed!

The bad news is: You need to RMA your DSM-750 because it is defective!

I told the guy this was my second one with the same problem and that a bunch of people are having this same issue. He told me that this may be a bad batch! Great!

FYI, I bought mines from Amazon so if you did as well, there's a good chance it is defective. I have been on hold to talk to the RMA people for 60 minutes, it can't get worse than this....

just got my new DSM-750 directly drop shipped from D-link and I get to the initial setup screen, but the remote doesn't do anything so it's dead. We waited forever and it seems D-link pushed out some defective products. Such a shame?
Am I missing something. The remote does nothing at the setup prompt. Oh, I've changed the batteries, made sure my unit wasn't behind the TV, did a million things, and nothing.
-------
I had the very same response - booted to main page - remote does not work - tried remote on my DMA2100 Linksys - works perfect (better remote than what Linksys provided)

Went to lunch, came back 2 hours latter and now it the remote responds - got into set up and set up completed. Works very well now.

I can only suggest that something maybe very slow in initial config or network set up.
Give it a try. Can't hurt. Mine is hard wired to Netgear router. Bob

Mine

I had not problems setting mine up. But I am not using the extender yet. I need to go out and get vista ultimate, I currently have business. I am actually quite pleased on the response time for browsing my media. I am going through my pc to my server for my media and it is pretty darn quick.

Just to let you all know, I went through dlink customer support and after I got disconnected from an agent I spoke to another agent and they told me it is a microsoft problem!!!! I am getting the Extender Communication Error. The sad thing is they may be right!! I can connect fine using the media lounge part.

Anyone else getting anywhere with this?

Like I mentioned in my previous post, D-link's position is that it is a HW defect and you should call them for a replacement. Personally, I feel like returning it to Amazon and wait until they straighten their business!

Brian,

How well does it work with the media lounge? I would like to be able to stream from my Windows Home Server. I stream movies off my Tivo to my WHS in MP2.

Has anyone been able to get it to work with VISTA yet?

It works pretty well actually. I am running vista 64 business for the media lounge and it seems pretty responsive. I just can't get the windows media center to work.

Responding to TonTonDavid. How could they let these out on the market? Is there any quality control. Has anyone gotten this to work with windows media center? I have not seen one person that has gotten this to work. That is why it is hard for me to image that everyone has the same symtoms and it is a hardware defect. It seems like a compatability issue with this model and vista. If it was just a random defect then where are the people that have gotten it work.

When I get mine, I will see if I can get my Windows Media Center working with Vista. Does not sound too promising. :-(

I'm thinking D-Link didn't load the right firmware on these, trying to find out more...

Perhaps -- But you shouldn't have to RMA over a firmware issue, they should be able to download the fix. I suspect a hardware problem. Somebody take your box apart before and after the RMA to see where the jumpers were added or the traces cut!

I suspect that the CSR didn't even know the DSM-750 had a feature to connect to Windows Media Center, I wouldn't put to much into them saving they are bad just yet.

For those who have one, what version firmware does it have?

It's most likely an issue with the DSM-750 not Vista, since the v2 extenders from Linksys work with Vista.

There is another thread in the Green Button on same subject.

http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/256548/ShowThread.aspx

Copied the text from user maiht. He included an 800# which may be a faster route to level III tech support.

Been reading the threads and thought I'd join in... I'm also having the same problem with the DSM-750 not being able to connect to MCE and getting the "Extender communication error". Tried contacting DLINK 3 times and got disconnected twice. I finally had time today and demanded they transfer me to Level III support, but unfortunately I got level II and the tech advised to call back M-F 8-5 pst to speak to a level III product specialist. Anyhow, long story short he gave me the c/s number to call and just ask for Level III and they'll transfer you instead of calling the tech support number and getting someone overseas. I'll have to try that and if someone else wants to do so, that would be great. The c/s number is ( 800-326-1688 ) then we have multiple people shooting for luck. I can't say if this is a dlink hardware error or MS vista because it's right after when the extender is found during the extender setup process and when it tries to create a mce user account in the background because if I go to MCE tasks/extender, I see the dlink-750 added and if you check adminstrative tools/event viewer/applications services/media center, look at event 505 Mcx2Prov , this error gets logged right after the "extender communication error pops up" and the only info that it has displays "Windows media center extender cannot exchange certificates with this device uuid:xxxxxxxx. Anyhow, if it's a dlink f/w issue, I hope we can get this addressed soon otherwise mine is being shipped back to Amazon too.

I had the same result.

Even if it was a vista problem don't WE think Dlink would have tested it to see if it really works. I would love to get a hold of a competent person there and see if they have been sucessful getting the extender to work.

I have also had the same luck calling support. You call them and you can tell it is located in India. You can hear everyone's conversations. I got disconnected 2 times. I will try calling that support number to see if I can get anywhere.

I just tried that number and I hung up, I got another overseas support person.
This sucks. I am RMA'ing mine, to much hassle!!!

It's not going to work without the right firmware, so that is what you should be asking from any CSRs. I have little doubt they will not be able to help with that though.

I'm working with the one gal who has a working one (direct from D-Link, I believe), much different firmware. 1.00.36 is from Nov. 2007. I had a pre-production DSM-750 last year, that's why I've doubted it's a hardware issue. I don't think much of anything has changed there.

Your going to need a USB flash drive to update the firmware once it is up for download. I'll post when I know more.

So from what everbody is saying about D-Link DSM-750 so far is it will
not work with Windows Vista. So does does anyone have information on
it saying that it will work with Windows XP since so far Vista is a problem.

It works fine with Windows XP using the MediaLounge software on the DSM-750. It will never work with Windows XP Media Center for use as a Media Center Extender, that's by design.

If you are using Windows XP, the DSM-750 works perfectly right now.

Re-work is being done on the DSM-750 products prior to shipping. We apologize for the hold up at our end. It seems a few items needed to be updated on our quick install guides and cd-rom.

This is directly from D-Link rep

Hmm...wild thread with the issues. I sure hope they address these (obviously, they have to as it doesnt currently work). I will be keeping an eye on this as I am just now looking into wireless options for a media extender to get to my other TVs from the HTPC.
