Help-No picture with Motorola STB and HDMI

Hello-
was helping my neighbor set up his new Panny plasma last night. Here is the problem: STB works fine with Component-video and audio. However, when we used HDMI hookup (changing the TV to Input- HDMI 1)- the pic hits the screen for about 3-4 seconds-NO audio, and then the screen goes black... Called Comcast-they did the basic "reset the box etc.." but still no pic? Guess they are coming out this AM-i said it must be the box.. It is a newer box-he just ot it last week.

Also, pardon my ignorance, but HDMI carries both Audio and Video correct? So , just to test the cable, we hooked up his HDMI enabled DVD player to the TV-Input =HDMI1 , and started a movie- got Video but NO audio.. hmmm

Suggestions welcome....

My next door neighbor got a Motorola box from Cox and the HDMI output failed a week later so it is not an usual problem. He has no problem with both audio and video from the STB to his Samsung TV.
