I have Tommy on SACD and would also buy Quadrophenia on SACD or DVD-A. I had read it was coming and maybe with the success of the Beatles and Doors DVD-A releases, who knows, maybe it is. Quadrophenia would be even better than Tommy in my opinion.

I'll ditto that. I loved this album in high school so I may be a little biased going in, but this really is a very nice mix. For those of you that are Who/Townshend fans but have never heard this, you will be in for a treat. For those who have heard this but never in hi rez multi channel, you are in for a very special treat as well. Highly recommended. (p.s. there are some killer "session" players on this as well:Clapton and Wood just to name two) |

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I finally picked up Tommy on DVD-A. I needed to push my amazon order past $25 for free shipping and this did the trick
![]() I've never been the biggest Tommy fan, but I gave this a dedicated/sit down listen and have found a new appreciation for the work Pete and the boys did on this one. It's really quite unique for the time considering how they fully explored some of the songs on this album. The fact that it's in HiRez MC mix is even better... give it a try. |

![]() About time you came around. Even more impressive when you consider that many of the tracks are actually demos.

anyone else compared the DVD-A to SACD?
I originally bought the SACD then a friend bought the DVD-A. I felt the SACD sounded slightly thinner than the DVD-A, and he has better stereo SACD playback so we exchanged discs.

Well, it's not as if I never listened to Tommy before...., it's just not a fav compared to Quad or Who's Next.... The DVD-A just allowed me to fully appreciate the work with the best possible SQ. ![]() |

And your point is..?

While it's only two-channel, I did recently download the 96kHz version of "The Smithereens Play Tommy" from HDTracks. I've also got a redbook CD of the London Symphony Orchestra's version of Tommy (with the Who and others singing). Both are very good, and worth a listen, even if not in surround.
