... if there was some type of device that could be mounted where the cable enters the home that was cablecard compatible and would allow any set in any room to receive subscribed programs without boxes? That would be nice, what do you think?

IPTV requires an IP interface. If the TV doesn't have an Ethernet interface how would you accomplishh the distribution/reception of the media?

A media server may be able to provide that functionality... but today, at a cost that most can't afford.

Who said this had to be something you could buy today? I'm talking about the future. It can be done, but no one is doing it as of yet.

I guess the big problem would be how to record that on the Win95 PC or VCR!

I know what your thinking about. Its like a STB that sends out a broadcast (UHF/IR), and your given 3 or 4 remotes, and your remote is like a portable phone, it doesn't have to point at anything.

But the wires would still have to come from the main STB. This technology is already seen in IPTV, with 1 main STB that powers 3 TVs, with 3 remotes, and cable going from the STB to the TVs.

And in Dual tuners. Some dual tuner STBs for satellite and digital cable have the option on letting you have 2 TVs hooked up. And they have 2 remotes. Dual tuners use 2 frequencies though IR and UHF and the main TV on the dual tuner you still have to point too.

But I agree, I would prefer an industrial piece of hardware that could allow me to not have a STB on every TV.

There already working on it. It's called the BroadLogic TeraPix.

A cable system can go all-digital. Analog subs, or people who don't with to have a box will have a TeraPix outside in the little gray box where your cable enters your home. It will be powered from the Cable plant, after they modify the system and taps to pass power down to the customer premise. It will have an output that decodes all the digital's to regular analog channel numbers which are compatable with the millions of TV's and VCR's that have been in homes for years. It will also have a straight pass-through outlet for any digital outlets (perhaps for a DVR, HD, SD, On Demand) may reside. Sounds like an interesting solution. Google it for more information.

Thanks for the link, at least I know it's out there. Maybe I'll see it in my lifetime. I sounds like AT&T is going after the all digital market here in the Louisville area since AT&T has bought Cingular and Bell South. What's weird is it has been that long ago that Cingular bought AT&T wirless only to now have been bought back by AT&T. Big business huh!
