Angry Blu-Ray = NO UNRATED VERSION! SD-DVD gets Unrated

It seems quite a few titles are getting shafted by Sony in regards to Blu-Ray. ULTRAVIOLET and now TURISTAS are both only available on BD in the theatrical cuts, while the SD-DVD's get the unrated versions. There is one other title that got shated like this, but the name escapes me.

I am betting they want maximum sales exposure, so they are not going unrated in hopes that everyone will carry these releases. Well, I won't even rent these releases.

You just know down the road they will double dip anyway.

Welcome to the Sony Triple and Quadruple dip sales model.

I really wish the studios would stop this practice.

Got bit by this one to many times with DVD.

I just won't buy the title till the second round now.

Update: Fox has confirmed 'Turistas' on Blu-ray will be the theatrical cut and not the unrated cut, despite "unrated" being printed on the cover art. That artwork is incorrect and we will replace it as soon as corrected artwork is received. Also, the extra features are confirmed to include an interactive trivia track and theatrical trailer only.

Another example: Dances With Wolves is the three-hour theatrical, not the four-hour extended version. For sure, Spiderman 2 will be theatrical, as well as Underworld when they get around to that title.

It's called "protecting the double dip."

This does get old fast. Lionsgate did it earlier with the theatrical versions of T2 and Saw; it's only a matter of time before they get re-released again.

Yep, all studios will do this. Note King Kong theatrical bare-bones HD-DVD, released the same time as the Extended Version SE on DVD.

I for one don't really care. I'd rather see a movie the way it was shown in theaters than some unrated version that contains a few extra scenes. My only exception would be the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I've double dipped in the past (3 versions of T2 on DVD), but am pretty much done with it. The only time I'll reconsider is if they release something with a better transfer. King Kong didn't need an extended edition. It actually could have used a bit of trimming in the standard release. Pete Jackson just went crazy.

Just my opinion of course.

I didn't like the extended edition. The water monster scene was kind of cool, but the rest was crap.

This is one of the reasons why I don't buy certain titles because I know another edition will be released some time in the future. They did it to me with LDs, DVDs, but damned if I'll play that game with high def discs. Online rentals get me by until the final edition hits the stores.

Man, that sucks. I was planning on buying Turistas but now I'll wait until they bother to release the unrated version.

2 versions on LaserVision (12"), 3 versions on DVD and 1 version on D-VHS D-Theater. I'm going to wait for the 2nd release on BD [Tony holds the record with 11 versions of T2].

yet another example, Windtalkers was not the much improved Woo director's cut, which was a true DC and not some unrated POS, I was really excited about that release until I found that out

Dances with Wolves is another disappointment for sure

you know how not to double dip? don't buy the version you don't want if you know another does in fact exist

Personally I prefer the Extended/Unrated editions, but this has always made me laugh. People around here love their OAR, and love their intentional film grain, each of which are less pleasing on the eye under the justification that they then "see what the director intended them to see."

Then, the same people complain that they don't get their deleted and extended scenes that said director did not intend to be in the movie.

Many times scenes are cut to appease the MPAA or to make the film shorter so that people will be more likely to see it in theatres, not because the director wanted it that way. Kingdom of Heaven is a prominent example of this.

majority of the time Film Grain is 100% natural and not intentional, unless you blame a director for wanting to use film(with known grain) over putrid HD Cam

so please try again

Well Universal's HD DVD release of Miami Vice was the Extended version. Universal's release of Chronicles of Riddick on HD DVD was the extended version. Universal's release of Fearless on HD DVD was the extended version. Need I continue.

I'm pretty sure Fox's The Marine is the Theatrical cut as well, while the SD Unrated had both the Theatrical and Unrated cut.

highdefdigest says today that Turistas will be "unrated"..

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news/

"...The latest CES-announced title to get an official street date and specs, Fox Home Entertainment will bring the holiday horror show 'Turistas' to Blu-ray on April 17.

Though the fear flick, dubbed 'Hostel'-lite by most critics, was not a box office hit, it may do better on video, especially as Fox will be bringing it to Blu-ray in a more gruesome unrated cut..."
