Neil Young DVD-A Stereo ?

Can anyone comment on the Neil Young stereo high res releases ? I don't even see them on Amazon anymore. I know Hawks and Doves was one of them.

I've got "Live at Fillmore East" and "On the Beach" - they are both stereo. "Harvest" is multichannel because it came from a Quad master. On the Beach is an excellent. The Fillmore recording is filled with great music, but live recordings don't benefit as much from hi-rez treatment, IMO.

Forgot to mention: The Fillmore show is a hi-rez DVD-video (therefore it won't play in my Acura's DVD-A player) but will play in any DVD-V player via digital or analog connections.

I own most of them and they're all very good, albeit mostly stereo only. If you're a NY fan, I'd try to track them down. I love On the Beach, and Harvest sounds fantastic in stereo. Some people don't love the Harvest surround mix, but it's nice to have.

I'm pretty jealous of your car ! I've never had a test drive to hear the system. It must sound awesome. I do have Filmore and Harvest,so I think I'm just missing On the Beach and Hawks and Doves. There's another one from Massey Hall planned for March or April in the format similar to Filmore.

"Harvest" was never released in quad. The 5.1 surround mix is new, and created by Neil in his own "style". His other surround DVD-A's are "Greendale" and "Road Rock V1". The stereo release of the "missing 4" on DVD-A was a result of NY not having (or wanting) to take the time to do 5.1 mixes for those titles, so stereo DVD-As came out.

Being an early DVD-A supporter, it was strange to have him abandon the format he campaigned for ("I'm not releasing my stuff until they improve the delivery method. CD is horrible") the way he did, when his last 3 of his last 4 releases came out on CD and DVD "Super saturated Sound" instead of DVD-A. I would love to ask him about that.

Went mental over the weekend and got American Stars 'n Bars and On the Beach in Fry's. Also got Hawks and Doves on Ebay. Thanks for the feedback everyone. Now to go listen.

There's an upcoming Neil release on March 13th, Live from Massey Hall done in January 1971 a few months after After the Gold Rush was released.
It will come in 2 versions, cd only and a CD\DVD with a hi-res stereo track and a video of the performance.
I believe CD Universe's track list is incorrect in that it lists Neil w\ Crazy Horse.
From all that I've read the shows were solo and were killer.
The track list looks similiar to the BBC show but it is longer, 17 tracks.
Should be great!

What's the BBC show that you mentioned ?

It's been available at record conventions on VHS for years.
A friend of mine gave it to me on SVCD about 4 years ago.
It's a 30 minute solo show from 1971.

I have several of the Neil Young DVD-A releases and three 24-Bit/96kHz DVD-V releases. Although it gets mixed reviews, I love "Prairie Wind" and the sound is excellent. I copied this from my list of high resolution discs:

Only "Greendale" and "Road to Rock, Vol. 1" get marginal thumbs up from me, all of the others I love.

Sorry, can't help myself.

I was subjected to Neil Young: Heart of Gold last summer at a film festival. It was the "surprise film". Sonic torture. About 40% of the audience walked out. And there was me thinking that they couldn't top 9 Songs as an offensive surprise film.

And when he started singing about his dog... Deary me.

Obviously an acquired taste.

Still, I'm sure plenty of you would have gladly swapped seats for that film on the huge screen plus decent sound system. Seems a shame to have wasted it on such an uninterested audience.

Must have been hoping for the premiere of 'Wham! - the Early Years'.

I believe actually it is 176.4kHz, but you are right, it isn't 96kHz. I would have to check but Harvest has a higher resolution stereo, either 176.4 or 192kHz. DVD-A is 44.1kHz or 48kHz or multiples of either.
