"Gangs of New York" and "Crash" in hd-dvd in Spain

Spanish local distributor Manga films has announced they'll release hd-dvd editions of "Gangs of New York" and "Crash" sometime in March.

I included the links but there are no more details whatsoever. This is tentative release information.

Crash is sweet. Wondering if they'll include all the extras that the BD left off.

Great! I was thinking I'd have to wait for Disney to get off their asses and release it on Blu-ray. If it's coming out in Spain, and on HD DVD to boot, I'm all over it.

'Gangs' will look amazing, its just a shame the film is terrible. Well, Daniel Day Lewis was good, I just wish he had carved up DeCaprio. I'd pay good money to see that in HD.

LOL

Regular DVD had a stunning transfer, iirc. Perhaps the HD Version will carry on the form.

So-so film though

I don't speak Spanish, but does some one know whether the text says something about the cut of Crash, theatrical or director's cut?

eh ? i don't think you remember correctly. very bad transfer. very un-stunning. this was certainly a demo disc ... to demo edge enhancement and to showcase just how bad miramax DVDs were sinking (PQ wise).

i really hope not. fingers crossed the ee wasn't present on the master (i.e. which might be used on the HD release). it was still very bad on a 720 version i saw, so my hopes are low.

I am looking forward to the release of Gangs of New York. Does anyone have an exact release date?

GofNY, huh?

My SD version has so much EE it's impossible to watch in some scenes. Looking forward to a 'bloody' good transfer.

Well it looked amazing on my (admittedly small at the time) screen so the faults you described, were not realy noticeable.

Most reviews were pretty impressed too too.

I guess you were watching on a larger screen/large projector to notice the faults....

Gangs of New York looked horrendous on DVD. An HD DVD (or Blu-ray, come to think of it) release can't come soon enough.

actually, at the time, no i wasn't. which is probably why i could sit through it without too much pain. although something didn't look right either. going up close to the screen i could see what a mess it was.

and they (miramax) played the old "splitting the film over 2 discs to make it look like they were trying to give as much space as possible for the best video experience". what a load of bollocks. IIRC, going by the file sizes, they could have fitted the film on 1 disc. so it was a scam.

after nearly 7 years of buying DVDs, let me offer you some advice. take EVERYTHING reviewers say with a grain of salt. if i've learned anything, it's that these reviewers have no more authority on assessing video/audio quality as most of the people of these forums.

and going off on a tangent, it doesn't really matter if they did. everyone's equipment/set up is different. just because one reviewer with a reference system finds something good doesn't necessarily mean everyone is going to have the same experience. it's not an exact science. further reason to throw in even more salt ... although saying that, flaws are flaws. and if a DVD is loaded up with the EE (which this one was), it should have been detected (which some reviewers failed to do).

I actually bought the r2 PAL version of Gangs because the R1 looked so bad.
One of the worst transfers I have ever seen. Filtered to death with the worst EE I've ever seen. The opening fight scene in the snow looked like there were forcefields around the characters.

http://www.dvdactive.com/editorial/a...-r1-vs-r2.html

Look at the "M" in the Miramax logo on the R1...!
