I've been using MPEG4modifier.exe and removing the "packed bitstream" on my divx/avi files, and my stuttering issues have "mostly" gone away. I still see some stuttering on occasion, while watching a movie, but there was so much going on on the screen, I suspect it was due to the transfer rate over 1.1 USB.

Best way is either rewritable cd or dvd. Much better performance from platters over the USB.

I want to buy this player, but I look the manual, and get two bad news
1. the USB doesnot support external USB HDD
2. the player only play audio file, NOT video file, from external USB driver

but from veiwing posts here, sounds like both of them are not true. can anyone help this out ? thanks.

The USB connector on the player will not power an external HDD. You have to use the power adapter that comes with your HDD and it should work. You also have to format to FAT32 and not NTFS.

The internal USB only has enough power for a flash drive. An external HDD needs more power. Heck, my computers USB won't produce enough juice for my HDD which is why it comes with it's own AC adapter.

Are most players as slow as this one when it comes to showing JPEGs in high def? Each photo takes several seconds to "scan in," from top to bottom. That makes for a very tedious slideshow, although the image quality is quite impressive.

My good old dvp642 finally kicked the bucket after 4 years of service and i got the dvp5982 instead with latest version(43), so far i am not happy - time search function(where you manually put in the time you want to skip to) is not working for divx titles(worked perfectly on dvp642 - and now there is no way to skip that scratch in middle of movie that kicks you out) and it sometimes takes up to 10 tries to start a movie from flashdrive(pen drive), is my unit defective or does everyone having these problems?

Hello...first post. I've tried browsing through most of the pages but can't find an answer...
I bought this DVD player as a refurb from the Philips Outlet website. I have a brand new Toshiba Regza 42HL67 LCD that I am trying to hook this up to. It has 3 hdmi ports, with hdmi input support for 720p, 1080i, and 1080p at 60Hz.

I can't get the DVD player to output anything to either HDMI port. Just says "No Video Signal" when I select the correct hdmi input. So I bought a cheap(er) RCA upconverting player from Wally Mart. That one works great, using the same 1.3a HDMI cable.

I called Philips tech support, and they claim the player only supports hdmi 1.1 cables. Before I send this back to Philips I just wanted to make sure this isn't really the problem, and that most likely the player's hdmi output port is busted.

Component video works fine, and the picture looks pretty good, but since it doesn't upconvert over component, I'd rather just replace this unit or get a refund.

Thanks.

This is rather obvious but you didn't menion it so I'll ask. Did you go into the player's menu section and turn on HDMI under the video tab? Also, if you did activate HDMI, did you turn the player off and on after connecting the HDMI? Sometimes when I initially connect my HDMI cable it fails to achieve a "hand shake" with the TV w/o turning it off and on.

The "HDMI Video Setup" option is always grayed out, with or without an HDMI cable connected. So I've never been able to access that menu option. Is it not activated by default?

That should be enabled when an HDMI cable is connected. If you have another cable available (it shouldn't matter if 1.1 or not) and the same happens, I believe it's the player's HDMI port. And if I am correct, someone else has had this problem before (and reported it in this thread).

Yeah, I forgot that it was automatic. OK, two other things to try: First, under the Preferences Menu, try resetting the unit. You have to roll down the screen to see this option. Second, the firmware update V37.07.32.43 states in the upgrade notes that it does three things: HDMI to DVI TV: resolve set losing resolution setting upon standby, set HDMI Audio setting default to ON and improve HDMI Compatibility. The HDMI compatibility may help you. However, educate yourself on the problems some people have had using the two bin files with and without the "s" when upgrading their units. I have the same DVP5982 working into a Toshiba DLP and have had a minor issue with the Philips not connecting via HDMI until I turn it off and on again. It only occurs when I have disconnected the HDMI cable. It works fine after that with no issues. My DVP5982 also came from the Philips Outlet.

I have just found a reference to a new Philips DVP-5990 player. I went to the Philips website and looked at its specs, but I really can't see any difference between it and the 5982. Does anyone here know any more about this new box?

It looks like the this unit - DVP-5992 - has USB 2.0. Might be possible to play higher bitrate videos from a USB drive with that.

Has someone tried yet? And how much is this model? Could not find a price on the Philips site.

MPEG4 Modifier rules!

I'm not sure this is true, if you can work out the USB issues, the movies seem to play exactly the same. And with a stuttering movie, even if you burn it to DVD and just leave it as an AVI file, I've noticed the same problem. Only if you convert it to a DVD movie format through a two hour process could I get rid of the jerky picture.

The person you were responding to actually gave the best advice I've read on this issue. I haven't tried flashing my player with new firmware because I don't need to. I fully resolved my stuttering movie problems using MPEG4 Modifier as he suggested. It works great and it's super fast. I'm now running every AVI file through it and doing the Unpack Bitstream function, it takes 3 minutes tops and it seems to resolve the issue. Then the AVI files play perfectly from a USB thumb drive or my FAT 32 formatted 320GB USB drive.

How fast can you fast forward though USB? I find I have much better control and that sometimes I have to pause a USB input to allow sound & video to sync. Don't have these problems with platters. I can FF @ 32x and get to where I left off at.

Fast Forwarding in USB mode

The fast forwarding is extremely slow when I am playing a movie off of my USB flash drive.

How do I "jump to" a specific time in the movie on USB mode?

Say I want to "jump to" the 45 minute timestamp of the movie? Another problem I am having is that if I press pause in the USB movie and then walk away for 15 minutes, when I return the DVD player has powered off and when I turn it back on it does not pick up at the same point in the movie but rather it starts from the beginning.

I applied the firmware upgrade .43 with both files (prior to reading this post) and my player will no longer play movies.

When I called tech support they say they know nothing about any issues with firmware upgrade .43

My old version was .40

What should I do? They want me to mail them back the dvd player for exchange. Is there any other firmware I can try? I tried to burn only the file without the S but my problems persist after that.

The player doesn't power ON anymore? If it doesn't, I would send them the player right away... there's not much you can do, I don't think.

And the player can't be reverted back to a previous firmware version. I guess this makes it useless even if it does power ON but doesn't work, huh? I would think the only other option would be a reset, if there is one (other than disconnect for few minutes?).

My player came with and was upgraded to the following:
version: 37.07.56.22 --> .25
sub-ver: 00.00.02.04 --> .07
8032: 05.00.06.05 --> no change
servo: 93.88.00.00 --> no change
RISC: 0A.00.03.01 --> no change
DSP: 09.93.02.38 --> no change
Region Code 1

I can't say enough good things about this player. It is an incredible bargain. It upconverts to 1080P and provides a great image while doing so. I've watched a couple of PIXAR and Dreamworks SD DVDs and the detail and colors look great. I don't think it takes too long to boot or load, nor does it seem flimsy.
How did you get an upgrade to .56.22? I went to the Philips site and all that was available was 32.43 which is what I have on my system now.

It does power on. If I insert a DVD it plays 1 second of video and then the screen goes black and it says "STOP"

If I plug in my USB flash drive it reads it for a second and then immediately goes to "STOP"

I am able to access the setup menu and I am able to flash the firmware again if I had the proper firmware other than .43

I can give you a link to a previous version if you want to try that, but I got them at home and can't do it until later today.

[EDIT] Here are the links, for version .35 and for version .40. Hope that helps, but I am curious about what you will find... let me know.

Thank you so much edgary! you are a life saver!!

I burned a cd-r with the previous firmware .40 and the player is back to normal operations.

I hope that this helps anyone else who has bricked there player by upgrading to firmware .43

Note that after installing firmware .40............ I DID NOT go into systems settings and apply the RESET command. Since it is working fine now I do not want to risk messing it up.

I could try to apply the firmware upgrade of .43 by only using the file without the S at the end but I dont want to risk it. Better to leave well enough alone.

I would like to add that phillips tech support is incompetent, they claim they have no record of any issues when upgrading the firmware. Please note that my player is a refurbished model that I purchased for $40 from phillips outlet website. It came to me with version .40 before I attempted to upgrade to firmware version .43

Philips tech support is stupid and they will tell you to mail them back the player and they claim they dont have firmware .40 available so if it wasnt for member edgary on this forum I would not have had an opportunity to flash the player with firmware version .40 which is stable version.

Amazing. I was told by Philips engineers that they were not sure if it could even be possible to downgrade to a previous firmware version. I had a problem once when I upgraded to version .40 (different problem) and, much like in their suggestion to you, the unit was exchanged. I am glad it worked out well for you.

First off let me give you specs. I have a Philips DVP-5982/37, I've been running it via HDMI to a Envision widescreen LCD with no problem
I have never did any updates to it. That out of the way.

I moved this unit to the tv in a basement (a six or 7 year old Sony 53 HD tv)
The tv only has components. I know the components work because I was using them with the other dvd player I have down there.

When I plug in the Philips DVP-5982/37 to the Sony. I can't see the bottom half of the screen....I made sure that the colors on components were matching and all that fun stuff but still the same thing. Here's a pic of kinda what it looks like.

any ideas what's wrong?

Hi,
I have an external HD plugged into Philips my DVP5982/37. Its formatted to FAT32 and externally powered. I have many files in it because i use it to play karaoke so for example mpegs would be in a file right on the hard drive called Artists A-C---then in a file Artist Name and the mpeg file would be in there...Unfortunately it wont open up the folder when i try to open up the first folder on the hd (ex Artists A-C) It freezes and i have to switch to dvd mode then back to USB to unfreeze. I have another file on the HD called movies and i can open that no problem and play movies from that folder but my dvd player wont seem to open up the other files.
Could it be because there are to many files or folders on the HD?
Is there any way to fix this?
I have tried with both firmware .40 and .43

Also Back on post 363 someone asked
"Media burned on a DVD show long file names. Media on the HDD only shows short file names. Does someone know of a Mediatek firmware hack to support long file names? HDD formated in FAT 32 should be able to."

I dont think he go an answer but does anyone know of one now?
Thanx
Thanx
