Dual Format Chipset From MediaTek

It was release last week at Beijing's IDF2007, no price point, check it out:

Very cool. I agree with JE3146

It's looking like manufacturers will just start looking for Univeral mechanisms. Makes the most sense really if we're talking about playback only needs. Recorders will be a another story ..they'll probably take until 2008 before we get word of potential choices.

It's not a drive, just a chipset (Mediatek doesn't make complete drives). Lite-On and TSST are the biggest ODD makers using Mediatek chipsets. Lite-On has however no plans to release a BD/HD DVD combo drive until next year (and is btw currently using Philips chipset in its BD writer). I guess it's possible that the drive in Samsung's coming dual format player will use it though.

I'm confused.

It looks very much like they are talking about a drive, but the stories all say it is a chipset, true.

They've listed 6x read speeds for both HD and BR. That is very fast for both formats.

Looks like the drives shown are reference designs, so it shouldn't be at all difficult to put in production fast.

I want that puppy!
