It's Official "The Fifth Element" Is Coming Out 7/17 Remastered

Seems like Sony is finally ready to say that they messed up on "The Fifth Element".

We got word from Sony on 5/11 and figured we'd post the official word here. The old version of "The Fifth Element" is officially discontinued. Sony is no longer supplying the title to retailers or distributors now. Retailers can continue to sell the title until they sell out.

The new release date for the Remastered version is 7/17. Sony has not stated if the new version will contain any new features, most likely it is just a copy of the old disc with new video. Sony is specifically calling the new version "Remastered" though, at least to retailers, it's unclear how they will make the new version look different from the old Blu-Ray version package-wise right now.

All the information below is provided to prove that this information is accurate.

New Catalog Number: 21520
New UPC Code: 043396215207
New Retailer Pre-Order Date: 6/14
New Street Date: 7/17

Cool. What about the "trade-in" program?

Wasn't it posted here that the new version will have Dolby TrueHD and the back cover will have the TrueHD logo?

Yep. It'll be 20/48 according to paidgeek.

So far Sony has only confirmed that the disc will have new picture, nothing about Dolby TrueHD or any other improvements or features. They have also not stated if the box will state "Remastered" even though that's how they are referring to the title to retailers.

The price has been confirmed to be the same $28.99 as the previous version. Our site will be selling it for $20.29.

Any trade-in programs will be handled by Sony directly so we don't have any information on the program nor did Sony mention there would be one when we talked to them.

If Sony was planning a trade-in program you'd think they would require retailers to pull all of their current stock on the title so there would be less copies for them to worry about exchanging, but they are letting retailers and distributors sell all of their current stock.

I expect Sony to act according to the same standards of fairness and customer-focus that they have always exhibited in the past.

In other words, "Good luck and thanks for the cash!"

Joe Sickpack doesn't think anything is wrong with the current version and technically the disk isn't defective.

Which is exactly why I wouldn't expect a trade-in program from Sony on the title. Sony has never been known for going out of their way for customers. Just trying to cash in on some of their rebates is a battle sometimes.

Can't Wait!!

This movie is a favorite in my family. I had originally bought the original BD when it came out but returned it unopened when I read all the horrid reviews. Just a hair over a year of waiting and a much better version will arrive. Props to Sony for not making us wait a lot longer.

This is the exact opposite of my experience... well, not my experience, but of a relative and a friend of their family.

This guy had some equipment go bad on him, and (without going into detail), Sony did right for him... so after hearing of this experience, my relative chose only Sony products when available. Sometime after he started doing this, one of the pieces of equipment went bad on him, so he contacted Sony about this and they went WAY out of their way for him.

I personally have only had one Sony product go bad on me (tape deck in CD player), but since I didn't care that much for the tape part anyway, it didn't bother me, so no personal experience dealing with them, but I just thought I'd bring up the fact that the above is not always the case...

Now we just need an exchange for the Traffic HDDVD...
Has there been any sort of acknowledgement that the Traffic HD DVD has a problem?

(I have seen the screenshot comparison btw)

No acknowledgement but the evidence is pretty damning.
Still waiting for a proper comparison between the old and the new SC Hddvd.
Xylon, get on it!

I have been buying Sony products for over 40 years and I have had better products and better support from them than any other company.

As to TFE, Sony is damned if they do and damned if they don't.

We need to understand that standards are improving and what was an acceptable transfer 2 years ago will not be acceptable in 2 more years. Not even close. Every significant film from every studio is going to be remastered.

A very valid question. Though it's worth having if you can listen to the rifftrax along with it.

TFE has become the standard DVD for comparing equipment. Hence, if you go into a store and they are playing TFE on some new device, you and everyone else will know what they are looking at and how to make the comparison.

When I had a shootout at my house with several projectors, I made sure to have multiple copies of TFE Superbit running on all the projectors.

Sony made a HUGE error in failing to release a perfect Blu-ray of this film last year. Everyone was expecting to see how good Blu-ray was, and boy did they did a high-voltage shock.

IMHO, the movie itself is terrible and has no reason to be seen other than the above.

What? There's only one reason this movie (and Ultraviolet and Resident Evil) exist:

"Corbin Dallus moolty-pass."

In this case it seems that a new 'remastered' version so soon would be at least similar to admitting that the first release was a problem or at least not what it could have been. Especially if there is a trade-in program.

now if they would do the same for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon i'd be happy. i'm not sure if Hero is released by Sony, that movie would look sweet in HD.

just a hair over 12 months before the first double dip shows up. I would say this format is right on schedule now.

Cool! And since it's possible for people who bought the old disc to trade up to the new one, this doesn't even qualify for the "double dip" moniker either. Hopefully paidgeek can chime in with some details about the trade-in program now that there's an actual confirmed date for the new edition.

To be fair, this isn't just a Blu-ray issue. I've seen the movie in a few other forms in HD and they were crap too. It was just a bad transfer whenever they mastered it to HD previously. Glad there's going to be a definitive version. I just hope it's actually done top-notch and not just an incremental improvement.
