"The Official Onkyo TX-SR805 Thread"
It is finally starting to arrive! I have not spent a great deal amount with it but I figured I better start a thread soon before someone kills me!
I have my 805 hooked up like this. HDMI 1 is HD DVD(sending in 1080p/60, HDMI 2 is Blu ray(sending in 1080p/24 or 60), HDMI 3 is DTHEATER JVC HMDT100(1080i) or my XBOX 360 ELITE(sending in 1080p)... I use 2 two of the components for DirecTV HD DVRs. My main DirecTV HD DVR (HR20-100 BLACK) goes straight to my VP. So far after doing a bunch of tests between the inputs I can say I am very impressed with the sound Quality. I will most likely have a Pioneer 94 player here on Friday so I will be able to do more comparisons with a blu ray player that can do advanced audio codecs. The Dolby TrueHD sounds remarkable. even my wife was very impressed with it. She could tell a difference right away! I am planning to watch all of The Matrix movies this weekend and now I can't wait! I do plan to get the 905 (I really could use 4 HDMI inputs plus the 2 OUTS will be fun) but if I did not need the extra HDMIs then the 805 would definitely be good enough! And the BIG question people have been wondering... YES! You can make the 5.1 into 7.1 over HDMI... Thank God! Because I would not want my back surrounds taking the night off whenever we watch HD DVD or Blu ray discs. This AVR at 130 watts per channel sounds like it is doing a lot more! I have quite a few subwoofers (7) around my theater. They are stategically placed. Some you hear some you just feel. Anyway, the 805 handled them like a champ! So far so good over here. I have sent in 1080p/60 and 24 without a hitch. I have also sent in 1080i, 720p, 480p, and of course 480i. They all work well. I only plan to watch 1080i and above for the rest of my life so I may not be the best expert when it comes to 480i sources. I have to head into Chicago later this morning but I will be back tonite. If you have any questions feel free to post them and I will answer them the best I can. I apologize for not posting any pics yet. I just haven't had the time to get some done. I will as soon as I can slow down and breathe. I hope my "mini" review helps out some of you. Again, I apologize for being curt but I have just been so damn busy this week. That's why I was so dissapointed I did not get the 805 on Friday or Saturday... I have only spent about 2 or 3 hours with it so far... But if you are still wondering if this receiver is worth it, DON'T! At this price range you won't find a better sounding unit with all these codecs and features... Onkyo has out done itself with this unit. More later... ![]() SPECIAL REQUEST: Question: I want to use component and or HDMI input and component and or HDMI output. What does the 805 convert to what? When does the 805 downscale 1080p to 720p? A: For component input > 805 > HDMI OUTPUT: 480i > 480p 480p > 480p 720p > 720p 1080i > 720p 1080p > 720p (It will convert component to HDMI with a max of 720p) With HDMI input > 805 > HDMI OUTPUT: 480p > 480p 720p > 720p 1080i > 1080i 1080p > 1080p (EVERYTHING IS UNTOUCHED) For component INPUT > 805 > OUTPUT 480i > 480p 480p > 480p 720p > 720p 1080i > 1080i 1080p > 1080p (EVERYTHING IS UNTOUCHED) HOPE THIS HELPS!

joerod,
First, thank you very much for getting this started. I certainly appreciate your effort. The 805 sounds like just what I am looking for. My only question is this: I have the XBox 360 that uses component out. Connecting this to the 805's component in, what resolution will I get if this signal is output to my TV over HDMI? Will it be 720 or 1080? Once again thank you for your time and effort. Best Regards, Steve |

Answering your questions quickly I can say first off, NO HUM issues here. Also, I did not use my ELITE with component so I will have to check on that one later. But my DirecTV sources would say either 1080i or 720p (depending on what I sent in) so I think that is good news! And as far as the front display, it was around midnight when I was testing out HD DVDs and all I can say at this moment is I do not recall seeing MULTICHANNEL on the display. I believe it said Dolby. I wish I would have memorized everything but it is hard trying to think about what questions fellow AVS members might ask me.

No problem. I will check that first as soon as I get back. And congrats OIFVET! The 805 is a breeze to set up...

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&highlight=hum Please perform this test to check for the hum issue: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&#post10064311 And as outlined here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&#post10065290 This is a description of the 804 hum issue (see if the 805 has it too): A general background level type of hum (from all speakers), only heard when no audio is actually playing through the HDMI connected source (i.e, DVD player powered on, but no disk playing, or disk is paused), and only when the volume level approaches reference (-15 and higher). This is not heard when actually playing DVDs (even in quiet scenes) -- and even at very high levels approaching reference. |

I already posted I did not hear a HUM issue. I can try that test when I get back but I have to admit since it was very quiet during my late night testing it won't be a top priority. Expanding on sound Q... I have an Onkyo TX1000 (msrp was 4999), I had a Denon 5803 previously, and a HK 7200 previosuly. I also have a few lesser Onkyo models that I use for my family room and one for my outdoor theater. The 805 is up there with my TX1000 receiver. If the 905 sounds as ggod (and I don't see why not) then it will definitley replace the TX1000 in my main theater. Actually, the 805 will be starting this weekend and if all goes well it will remain there until the 905 appears in August sometime... The 805 has great sound range levels. It has very good clarity as well. When people whisper it sounds like they are in the same room as you! And as far as power goes it can handle its own quite easily and I think my setup pushes receivers to the limit. Also, my ELITE sounded sweet going thru the 805... Hope this helps some...

While some further testing might be in order, post #6 indicates no HDMI hum. My understanding is that, even on the 804s, this issue was reconciled with a firmware upgrade some time ago. I would be very surprised if it plagued the 805s.
My question (which nobody here could answer, of course) is where are the professional reviews of these models? Surely review models were sent by now if consumers are getting their hands on them. Friday can't come soon enough... ![]() |

That's just it though. I should have had my unit last Friday but a UPS error made me have to wait a little longer... I work with a custom installation company and we get them usually before everyone else. Sorry if you don't consider my review "professional" enough but under the circumstances it was the best I could do...

Is there a GUI or OSD? Can you provide screen shots? Also, is the 805 the model with the Reon processor or is that the 905? If so, can you describe the conversion and or any settings (Contrast, color, brightness...etc) that can be adjusted using the reciever?

Hey no offense powerknowledge.
I agree, you would think the magazines would get some units early so they can have reviews to... I have my 805 going to my crystalio II but I did have it go straight to my sony ruby as well. And I also sent it to my wife's Toshiba LCD in her bar. And not to mention to my "soon to be adopted" daughter's Viewsonic LCD in the playroom. In all instances it worked well. I should have mentioned that in my first post! The HDMI handshakes have worked flawlessly with my equipment. ![]()
