Onkyo DV-HD805 HDDVD Player - Picture and a few Details

It will launch in the Autumn
It is based on the Toshiba HD-XA2
It will have tweaked Audio and SD Video
Notice the DTS HD Logo in the picture

This came from What Hifi here in the UK. The Article also mentions Onkyo is officially dual format and hopes to release a dual format player in the future:

I'm trying to make myself happy with my A2 (which I am) until someone releases a good quality player that also does DVD-A and SACD. If I can at least get DVD-A support, I can look for a BD player later on that does SACD and have all bases covered.

I wonder if Tosh is not using DVD-A because they want to the format to die, to keep cost down, or to give people a reason to rebuy a new player down the road.

Maybe I'll just have to keep my A2 until Denon (or other higher end company) gets into the game years from now.

Either way, glad to see someone releasing a player. It will be interesting to see how other companies can compete with price on Toshiba units. They need some incentive for people to buy them as cheap as the Tosh players are and the fact that the specs on the Tosh is already pretty incredible for their respective price points.

I currently have a 120V HD-XA1, I am quite happy with it but would prefer more reliable playback and to get rid of the step down transformer (UK is 240V). I want HD DVD, Blu, DVD, ILink and HDMI in as few boxes as possible.

It looks like an ILink ready HD DVD player is unlikely so the Onkyo could server as my HDDVD player (Will pay extra if it has better 5.1 analogue outputs which the article suggests it will). For Bluray, SACD, ILink and DVD-A I think the rumoued Pioneer BDP-LX90 would fit the bill so these two players together could probably deal with all my 8cm disc needs.

I'm not that concerned about having a true universal player for everything. But if I could get all formats supported over 2 players that do everything well at some point. I will be happy. I'm using the A2 now and will hold off on BD until finalized specs and reasonable prices.

As good a job that the A2 does with audio, I don't want to change to something else in time that has more features if it doesn't do the basics as well. In the end, superb PQ and AQ are king. Everything else is a bonus.

Many Denon players were based on "inferior" Panasonic transports, etc.

I'm sure there are no shortage of AVS fans who are too good to own a Toshiba HD player but not above getting the same thing with an Onkyo badge on it and a few audio additional tweaks/features.

Onkyo could price it at $899 and still move quite a few with the elite crowd.

EXACTLY how I feel about it...I have no problem adding a second player to sit nice and neatly beneath my A2, simply waiting on a Blu Ray player to be both stand alone and have all the features at a friendly price (and of course some exclusive movies that I can't get on HD, because honestly, all the stuff I prefer has either come out on both or HD only - Spiderman could change that though ). Basically, I think a BD player will be bought for my house at some point for supplimental purposes, to 'fill in the gaps' with what I want that I can't get in Red - pretty sure my TV won't know the difference.

An XA2 based player with DTS-HD MA? I'm waiting for sure. I will finally bite with a G3 player.

Now the BLU-RAY Camp just needs to get BD-J and all their other crap together so I can buy one of those also.

I personally wouldn't ditch my Tosh for an Onkyo unless it was shown to perform better. I don't look at Onkyo as any sort of "Elite" DVD manufacturer. They have a wide range of receivers that goes for all price points, but I don't think they are regarded that highly from a DVD standpoint. If they are, I'm unaware of it.

If an Onkyo player came out that tested well and had added features that I really wanted then yes I would consider it. However, I think it is going to be tough for me to ditch my Tosh with the Sharc audio processors if other manufacturers decide to use something cheaper. The only way I'd replace my A2 is comparable performance plus added features. I won't take any sort of step down.

I still think the A2 is the biggest AV bargain in a LONG time. It is amazing they can build a player that performs as well as it does for audio and video in a $250-$300 pricepoint and it is likely going to continue to drop!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
This would go nicely with my soon to be Onkyo reciever.
Now if I could only find the perfect speaker set.

But but but, Blu Ray is better!!!!!1one.

No seriously, it will be nice to get another manufacturer on board finally.

LG with their second gen combo box and Sammy with their first gen, both being much better than the current dual box that is out.

I hope they don't ever release any Blu ray related products. HD DVD needs all the exclusive support it can get.

The DV-SP1000 was and still is a superb DVD player, better than anything Pioneer have yet made and not far off my personal favorite the Marantz DV9600. This HDDVD player is not going to be as good quality as the DV-SP1000, it will be less than half the RRP but... it should be an interesting option for those wishing to use the Analogue outs (Where I suspect the biggest imporvement over the HD-XA2 will be).

Its a shame I dont see a genunine feature being added to the XA2 design, Onkyo could have properly reworked the audio side and offered Balanced Outputs, SACD, DVD-A and I-Link.

I only own HD DVDs but I dont think this is a productive comment, dual format players are a win win situation for HD DVD owners at this stage.

This quote was in the article

"The official word is that the company supports both formats, and is hoping for a viable universal solution somewhere down the line."

I wonder if they truly support both formats... or if they are going to be "neutral"* like Warner Bros.

Nice! So would this be considered a G2 or G3 player? G2.7? G2.7.1 maybe...? Too bad there's no shot of the back.

Since its based off the XA2 its technically a G2, but it is the first for the company so it is a G1, but is is being released after all of Toshibas G2s so it is a G3.

To me it means they may do a "universal" player "down the line." I really like that last part.

Basically means, "By 4 days before Christmas". Many people fail to realize that a company saying that something will be out in the Fall means by about December 21st.
