Tartan Video Announced Blu-ray Exclusive

I like Korean Movies, this works for me,,,

Another studio joins in BR exclusive, the supports are getting stronger and better on the blue side.

this is HUGE.

edit: after reading the article i see that Oldboy is already announced, this is now bigger than HUGE. given tartan's reputation for making the best quality out of the transfers, i can't be happier being blu. well, i can when Edko starts releasing on blu-ray also.

This is great news for Blu-ray! Nice to have the official announcement.

Does Tartan have a website? I'd like to see exactly which titles are in their catalog. I only know of a few goodies. There's bound to be more.

Personally I would love to see A Tale Of Two Sisters released in hi-def. One of my favorite films. I have quite a few Tartan releases on DVD.

Tartan has a reputation for putting out great quality transfers? ^_^

My collection says otherwise. Though they're average I guess. If by average you substitute crappy..

Hopefully they'll start making a name for themselves PQ-wise with these BD releases.

Oh wait, the region coding thing just popped into my mind. Man it would suck if the UK releases turn out to be region coded. And this announcement is just for the UK right? Tartan is distributed by Sony in the US? I'm a little confused on the wording of the announcement whether these will be released in the US as well.

Well anyways, for a small studio announcing three films isn't too bad. Hopefully this isn't all they have in store for release this year.

from what i've read, it's likely the movies you found crappy are due to the master being crappy. i've read some comparisons on dvds released by multiple studios and tartan's pq usually comes out on top. i'm not saying being on top doesnt mean it's not crappy, but they do a better job than others with what they get to work with.

No, a lot it's been a QC issue. Poor encodes. Crushed blacks, softness, some moiring/aliasing type issues. But they are getting better, I will give them that. Crappy was maybe a little harsh for a company who has shown improvement.

And if they release In the Mood for Love on BD they'll be my favorite studio ever!

i've still yet to see Audition, wonder if we'll get a release of that on BD.

i know my mom will definitely want Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Spring if that ever gets a BD release.

Along with Oldboy (didn't care for the two "Sympathy" movies), I would love to get Memories of Murder and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter (may have the sequence of the seasons wrong) - they are among my favorite movies of all time
- anyone know whether Tartan owns the rights to these?

Note that this news is for Tartan Video UK, here is their distribution rights list:

http://www.imdb.com/company/co0105964/

Also note that every UK Tartan BD release will also come with a DVD (double pack), and the price of their BD's will be pretty steep:

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=65295

Non the less this is great news and I don't mind paying premium for a couple of movies now and then if the value is good!

To my knowledge Tartan UK only have the distribution rights to 'Sympathy for Lady Vengeance' (Chinjeolhan Geumjassi) and 'Oldboy' out of the Vengeance trilogy. One other thing to note is that one of the best Samurai movies of recent times is also distributed by Tartan UK, and that movie is 'Twilight Samurai' (Tasogare Seibei):

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0351817/
