SI (since inception): since the inception of both formats (April 2006 to the date shown above), of every 100 hidef disc units sold, 60 were Blu-ray and 40 HD DVD.

Relative sales of dual-format simultaneous new releases

It has been argued that the sales of exclusive titles don't tell us much about the format war, and that we should look at the relative sales of titles that get released on both formats.

The primary source for this thread is Home Media Magazine which has been publishing Blu-ray vs HD DVD sales information since the year began.

To access the magazine, scroll down the page. On the left you'll see a box entitled "This Week's Digital Edition", and underneath the text "Read It Now! Click Here". Click that. Usually, the sales ratios are on page 3, and the top-sellers chart is in the "High-def" section.

From time to time, the Home Media Magazine research department publishes sales information based on Nielsen VideoScan data, augmented with information provided by the studios.

Actual sales figures

The percentages published weekly don't give us actual unit sales. However, some more specific information has been released during 2007:

Sales since inception to March 18: 846,771 Blu-ray/712,013 HD DVD

5. Reuters article, Blu-ray outpaces HD-DVD in U.S.: Home Media Research
Total sales of Blu-ray discs totaled 1.6 million units from January 1 through July 1, compared with 795,000 HD-DVD discs sold in that period.

An estimated 3.7 million high-definition discs have been sold, including 2.2 million in Blu-ray and 1.5 million in HD-DVD through the end of July, according to Home Media.

Stephen Nickerson, senior vice president, market management at Warner Home Video , reported sales of about 190,000 Blu-ray units of 300, versus 97,000 in HD-DVD since July 31.

Let me emphasize again the importance of sticking to the topic at hand.

Specially amazon tracking numbers, dvdempire sales percentages and other retailer indicators are not our primary topic.

I'll start with a guess at 71:29 for next Friday. I think sales of 300 will swamp the other hd dvd and bd releases for last week, and they won't make much difference to the ratios.

I am going with 66:34, basically on the strength of Hot Fuzz helping the overall ratio be better for HD DVD than the 300 ratio alone.

65:35 for 300 would represent a move FORWARD for Blu-ray.

The ratio was 62:38 for The Departed, previously the #1 selling title.

You also have to account for the whole mix of titles this week, which innately favors HD DVD.

I think that 65:35 would be great for the week. Please put me down for this.

An idustry source who wishes to remain private has told me it is 65-35 for Blu-ray.

This doesn't surprise me, but the overall sales number is much larger than I thout it would be.

so it can be 162.500 : 87500 for BD, so almost 2:1

I'll reiterate my previous prediction of 70:30, though Hot Fuzz has sold better than I expected. I don't think it will make a large dent because of availability problems.
