Why so heavy?

Why are so many new CRT tvs so darn heavy? I thought the idea was for them to be getting lighter, not heavier. The one I just bought is so heavy and big you'd think it was from the 70's. My father says his six year old tv of the same size (27") is lighter than the one I purchased. My grandparents two y/o 27" is even lighter than my father's and is very slim with only a small hump in the back. So what's the reason they're so big? Is it because they're flat screen and/or Standard Definition? I can't see any other reason they'd be that big.

The glass tube of a flat screen has to be much thicker to withstand implosion. Most of a TV's weight is in the glass tube.
