The "Official" Onkyo TX-SR705 Thread
This is the official page for the receiver. Please try to keep on posts here. Since there are a couple of places selling it now, some people can provide reviews on it.

ABT is selling it for $719, but they don't have any in stock and don't expect them til the end of the month.
Circuit City also is selling for $719, but have none in stock. I'm considering CC with the additional 10% off in store coupon, should counter the sales tax. |

I got my 705 last weekend from Video Only in Seattle and so far everything has been working great. The unit doesn't seem to run that hot (mine gets a bit warm) and I've experienced zero popping issues. Now, I don't have a PS3 and I hear that's where most of the users have heard popping so I won't know for sure if popping has been solved until I hook up an HDMI 1.3 source.
I ran into some video upconversion issues through my xbox but that was mostly because the component->HDMI maxes out at 720p and I was running my xbox at 1080p. For awhile I was getting no video at all even though it still should have outputted at 720p. Sad to say I'm unable to play guitar hero on it due to a slight, but still noticable, lag in the audio. Reducing the A/V sync to 0 ms doesn't solve this problem so I guess I'll have to live by running the xbox directly to the TV. |

Slight popping noise
Quote:
Things I tried to eliminate problem, or I should say annoyance: 1. Turned off the Audyssey EQ (helped on the 805 made no difference on 705. 2. Changed crossover settings for speakers with many different settings. 3. Checked all my audio settings of PS3 and Toshiba HD-A2. 4. Swapped 3 HDMI cables on my PS3. 5. Swapped 3 HDMI cable on Toshiba HD-A2 6. Said a prayer! 7. The Man upstairs told me to just live with it!

Some people are really getting hosed around by the companies selling the 705.
1Call will refuse to pricematch unless the other company has the sale price on their website AND they have it in stock. Others said the same thing. The problem is, many are advertising it but few actually have it in stock. Amazon sells it at the higher price but it is actually through 1call. Sounds like J&R just got it in stock. B&H has it in-stock but only $5 cheaper than 1call. ABT had it in stock last night when I ordered mine but said they would probably be sold out by today, which it seems they are. Crutchfield gave me a deal between ABT's and 1call's price but that went to backorder so I cancelled there and ordered from ABT. UPS on my order says they received shipping notice and ABT said I should get it by Friday. Ships from Chicago which isn't that far away. Hope you guys have luck in getting one soon at a good deal. I really wanted a silver one but didn't want to wait any longer so I grabbed a black one while I could. My HD-A2 player (dirt cheap prices now) should arrive Thursday so I am getting stoked!

The funny part was i was just calling to see if they had gotten them in or not, and he put me on hold after taking my order number and cameback a while later and said he upped my shipping for free and that i will get it friday(at least i hope i dont have the tracking number yet). I then asked him about my parents 705 and the same deal he upped the shipping and said they should have it by friday and that the reason it took so long was so that "he saw it leave out the door." |

Update ..... Thanks Artslinger, and others
Quote:
I was frustrated today by my dealings with the various big online vendors regarding the 705 with the run around and more that I was getting as I called some of them. I'd decided that the 705 (either color) really met my needs in performance, size, price and more so really wanted this model over the 805 and 605. It really fits my application perfectly. After researching THX, my room size, future room size (new house), etc, etc.....the 705 fit the bill. I was really frustrated with CC when I tried to order online, so I called their 800 number and got the run around on their great advertised online price. I talked to my wife after the incident(s) (my wife really wants a new AVR to replace the dead Sony who has given me spousal approval to purchase....she suggested I go by the CC store on the way home and see what they could/would do. After all I am a very, good customer of CC in the past two years alone I've spent thousands and thousands of dollars there as I prefer CC to BB in all regards. So I go by and tell my tale to the sales associate and he says let me look and see what I can get. My local store won't be regularly stocking the 705 (order only) but when he looked in the system they had @ their warehouse 180 units of the 705 on hand. Yep.....180! I showed him the web price including web coupon, etc and said get me that at that price or better please. He could not do it w/o manager approval but the manager came over and punched in a password and updated the price and gave it to me for a tad under the best CC online store price! And he even apologized on behalf of the online store. So now I don't have to wait long....it's due in my local store this Thursday (8/9) morning. I don't have to worry about the Fedex/UPS delivery issues. I don't have to worry about dealing with a remote online vendor if there is a problem. I can go by CC and drop the unit on their counter if I have a problem. In total the price I paid was about $32.00 less than the total price J and R had quoted me, and J and R is out of stock and I would have had to wait. Plus the price is waaaaaaaaaaay lower than the quote ABT gave me. The morning was frustrating, even with the CC online staff. But the local CC store cam through for me.....they always have. So now do I need to get better HDMI cables? Are there HDMI 1.3 cables or do any HDMI cables do the trick? Thanks again to Artslinger who has been so kind and helpful.....I truly have a new friend there! Bill |

Glad to see you finally got some cooperation and a good deal with a 705 on the way! Now I bet a bunch of thread readers will speed to their nearest CC to see if they can get this deal. ![]() Please- those who have your units post more impressions/reviews. Are there any online reviews now that this unit is out?

I was informed by the wife yesterday that I need a smaller footprint receiver..and I stumbled across the 705...I was looking at the 875 or the Denon 3808ci. Now the wife says the AVR can't be greater than 15" deep or so. So here is my question: I am buying a 1080P plasma. The BB salesperson says that if I don't buy a 1080P receiver, it makes no sense to have a 1080P plasma. I also have a directv HD DVR, and I am buying 5 B&W CM1/CWM speakers for a 5.1 HT setup. Might get a Blu-Ray DVD player.
Will the 705 work? Do I need a separate amp for the B&W speakers? . Why is the BB salesperson telling me I can't run the 1080P TV through the 705?? Please help! Need to know the pros and cons of using the 705 with a 1080P plasma, and maybe a Blu-Ray DVD player. |

The 705 will do just fine - assuming it has no heat or popping noise issues like the 605/805. The salespeople have no clue. Definitely get a 1080p TV. Now you have to decide between LCD and plasma, but that's a different topic (FWIW, I went through the same decision a few weeks ago and got an LCD instead of plasma, the Samsung 4665F).
Be aware that the Onkyos put out a lot of heat, so if you have it in an enclosed cabinet you will need a fan to pull the heat out, your wife may not be happy when it sets her brand new cabinet on fire ![]() |

If the cabinet is ventilated, will it be OK? Why do the BB salespeople tell me that running the TV through a non 1080P receiver will render the TV worthless? |

I had a good experience getting a deal at Crutchfield on the 705 but it was backordered. I cancelled yesterday and ordered from ABT. Now the Crutchfield rep called me back today and said they will get them in on 8/13 (Monday). I told him about the forum and he said I could give his direct number. He was very nice. Ziggy @ 1-800-388-2911 ext 3258. He said just tell him that I sent you and he can get you a deal. He came down in price after I told him about other deals. Good luck.

Why????
Quote:
Because in my experience the BB lot are way undertrained and even the way BB hooks up and displays their televisons tells you a bit about how serious they are are really being a great electronics retailer. I always think of the BB staff as "blue shirted aisle trolls" just there to make sure you buy something, anything. I think the 705 willl run your upcoming B&W speakers fine. I've been using much lesser powered amps on my B&W's with great success. I've had an earlier Onkyo and more recently a Sony 5.1 unit running mine and they've been fine. The 705 will likely exceed your expectations. My first amp was an Onkyo and it was the longest running most trouble free amp I've ever owned. Actually, I sold it and a matching tuner this past weekend (both still working like new) to a guy after 19 years of regular use. Onkyo generally makes nice, nice gear. Bill |

Does anyone know if the 705 has a "hidden menu" like the 805? and do you access it the same way as the 805? such as:
"Based on previous posts in this thread, to access the hidden menu: press & hold AUX on the AVR and push the power/standby button concurrently on the 805"
