CRT Discoloration! Help!

I wasn't sure if this was the right forum to post this, forgive me if it isn't.

I own a Sony KD30XS955 CRT HDTV. I noticed heavy discoloration beginning to occur. Luckily I had a warranty and the repair guy came over and though he couldn't completely fix the problem, he did drastically improve it by simply entering some hidden menus via my remote control.

Now the problem is coming back with blue and red clouds on the left side of the TV.

What can I do to get rid of them? I really don't want to have to get a new TV!

Make sure you have no items creating magnetic fields near the set. Non-shielded speakers can effect the set even from a few feet away. If there are suspect items near the set, move them and cycle the power a few times over the course of a couple of hours to see if the color blobs disappear.

BTW, if the adjustments (very likely LANDING) were made with an external magnet field near the set and then the item was moved, this could also be the source of the color blobs.

Well my 5.1 speakers are about a foot above the set and two feet to the left and right, but doesn't that seem like a reasonable distance?

Also, what do you mean by cycling the power? Turn the TV on and off?

Don't assume that "shielded" speakers are adequately shielded. I would test the case by moving them for a while. Other electronic/electrical components may also cause problems. Transformers in power supplies create magnetic fields as well as electric motors.

The surging sound you hear when you power on your set is the degaussing coil/circuit energizing. The degaussing coil helps eliminate the effect of transient magnetic fields that may have magnetized portions of the tube. It may take a number of cycles to completely demagnetize the tube. The degauss circuit gets hot when energized, therfore a timer is associated with it such that it will not energize within 5-10 minutes of a previous cycle. Therefore, I recommend using the set for a day or so, cycling the power every now and then.
