Official Sony XBR4/XBR5 calibration thread
I think it is time. Please, post the type of TV you got: 32", 40", 46, or 52" and settings you use. It would also be helpful if agree what kind of channels/HD sources/movies types to turn Cinemotion on or off.

If you start an "official" calibration thread, don't forget to actually post your own calibration settings. Just a thought ![]()

Here are the settings I came up with for my 52" XBR4 after running the Avia calibration dvd.
HDMI Settings (BD playback via PS3) Picture Mode: Custom Backlight: 4 Picture: 72* (initially set at 55, upon further testing set to 72) Brightness: 52 Color: 57 Hue: 0 Color Temperature: Neutral Sharpness: 30 Noise Reduction: Off Advanced Settings White Blance: R-Gain: 0 G-Gain: -5 B-Gain: -5 R-Bias: 0 G-Bias: -5 B-Bias: 0 Color Space: Standard (Setting to Wide may require further dialing of R-G-B Bias and Gain as it tends to emphasize G and B) Detail Enhancer: High Everything else set to Off (Setting Detail Enhancer to High results in some extremely sharp detail on live action BD material) Motion Enhancer: set to Off for most BD material, set to High for SD cable |

think maybe my initial settings were more accurate? I originally had picture set to 55. I think during the daytime with ambient light present a higher picture setting works well but last night watching a movie I felt some eye fatigue as well and dropped it back down to 55. Have you done any tweaks from my settings? I'm still trying to dial it in a bit more myself. |

![]() What I did was use your settings as posted but just turned on "black corrector". it worked well but didn't have time to fiddle any more or check if it was making things too dark. That DRC palette control looks interesting... |

I thought they were good but I only ran the Dirt and Heavenly Sword demos with those settings. (picture set to 55) and didn't have gaming mode turned on. No motion artifacts, just some screen tearing on Heavenly Sword but that's inherent to the demo and not something introduced by the TV.
Also, I started messing around with the DRC settings last night while watching HBO. I'll keep messing with it and post if I think I can get a better picture with it tweaked properly or if its better to have it turned off. Would've been nice to have two cable inputs on this set. Then I could just use PBP to see the difference while I adjust settings using the same source / different inputs. Last edited by coma426; 08-21-07 at 02:18 PM.. |

Do you have a STB settings? I found it difficult if not impossible to have a common settings for SD and HD channels. Would be nice to hear your advise on Video Option settings as well. FYI: I have 3250HD STB connected to HDMI post #1. Last edited by Alex the Great; 08-21-07 at 07:57 PM.. |

Here's a question which possibly nobody can answer. If you're watching HD and SD at the same time using PBP, are you effectively seeing both picture settings at the same time? If so, it would be possible to have a movie playing from HBO on demand (or some other channel) via cable and the same movie via DVD or Blu-ray HD-DVD and dial the pictures together. I think it would require hitting the HOME button to do the dialing on the correct input, and quite a bit of back and forth between dialing and viewing the content PBP but it would be better than just guessing. Anyone care to give it a shot? |

I found that watching BD from the PS3 motionflow and cinemotion weren't necessary. With motionflow set to standard or high (while watching 24p BD) there is some artifacting along edges of moving objects. If an arm waves across the screen you might see a sort of rippling effect on the trailing edge of the arm. That is with cinemotion turned off. With it set to Auto2 and motion flow to high I didn't notice it very much at all. I'll do some tests setting cinemotion to Auto2 and motionflow to standard and to high on some fast moving material on Casino Royale tonight and report back, but I think that those settings are better suited to non BD material as the playback with them both turned off was silky smooth. On SD material those settings can smooth out the image nicely.

Has anyone done any dialing for SD content? I'm curious to know if anyone is using a different color temperature setting than neutral for SD. |

Greetings everyone,
I'm glad I found this place.......I have been driving myself nuts for the last 3 weeks trying to calibrate my LCD. I first purchased the KDL-40w3000, and after tweeking for a week decided it had to go back. I originally was using a 32" bravia S2010, and it looked great I had no complaints. But I wanted something bigger to watch, and of course 1080p 24. So after returing the W3000 I picked up the KDL-40XBR4, for a price I am still shocked at ![]() I saved a little over 700. So here is my dilema I have been trying to calibrate the xbr4 for about a week now, using different settings I found on this sight, and I still can't get the pic to pop like it did on my 32" the only way I get it close to what I like is through tweeking Vivid. I am using HDMI cables for both BD 300, and HDDVD XA2. they are running through a Sony DG1000 first and then to the TV (for audio purposes) I'm okay w/ the pq with both, but they don't look like they did on the 32" Maybe a little more tweeking. If I have them set to anything but vivid, the pq looks dull, uninspired, and flat(muted) The biggest problem I have is the pq that I am getting from Directv HD. I am using the H20, and the H20 700, and both look horrible. Both are directly connected using HDMI, and set to 1080i output. the pq looks horrible, and no where nears the 32" I tweek one channel and the rest look horrible ![]() Could it be the compression Directv uses??? Anyway My apologies for this being long winded, any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!! The one good thing is my XBR4 has no clouds or stuck pixels so that was a plus ![]() Also the HDMI cables I am using are a mixture of Monoprice, and mid to high end monster.............any suggestions ![]() |
