MichaelJHuman, Not a first: I've owned the Sony STR -9000ES digital receiver for about 3 years now; it has 200 x 7 W output. It performs wonderfully, but is an older design so it does not have HDMi connectivity or codecs for translating any of the new high-def DVD audio formats. I'm calmly waiting for an updated STR-9100ES ? model or whatever they call it. GLD, ABQ, NM

Since this appears to have turned into the main thread on this AVR, I'll ask this again here:

The press reports all agree that this unit will ship with HDMI V1.3a. Since it is not shipping until at least January of next year, why do you suppose they decided to do this instead of implementing the newer HDMI V1.3b standard -- with its stricter signal, functional, and interoperability design and testing requirements?

The question is, is this a shot across the bow of HDMI Org for fiddling with the specs too much? Is HDMI V1.3b a non-starter compared to HDMI V1.3a? Or is HDMI V1.3b compliance still too hard to achieve?

This would seem to have been the ideal product for Pioneer to stake out a claim on HDMI V1.3b if that "standard" is going to be a factor in the market.

No, and I've been looking for the first one.

The 1.3b spec was finalized some months back, but of course it must have been circulating prior to that. As best I can tell it is entirely quality and testing related (no feature changes). But it could be a real problem for the manufacturers. The testing rigs alone are supposedly quite something.

Based on the product development cycles we've been seeing, I expected 1.3b to start showing up on products intended for first shipment AFTER Christmas -- and this Pioneer product, being a new flagship, just struck me as a logical choice. For example, the first 1.3a products shipped about 6 months after 1.3a was finalized.

We've heard very little about 1.3b from the usual PR channels, and I'm wondering how much of that might be due to manufacturer resistance. That's why I'm poking at this one.

I'm trying to figure out whether manufacturers will start making marketing hay out of 1.3b when they finally ship it -- i.e., your previous 1.3a purchases are now "obsolete". Or whether it will be pretty much a marketing non-issue much like 1.2a.

Yeah, and something like the B&K can not do even 1/2 of what this new Pioneer can do. If you tried to go with seperates than can do all of what it has, including the part about it having 7 channels of 200wpc amplification, you would go well over the price of this Pioneer. You would have to start with something like the Anthem D2 or the new Denon AVP-A1HDCI pre-pro just to be close to the equal of the front end features, both which are priced the same as this, just for the pre-pro part, and then you would still need to buy 200wpc x7 channels of amplification. Not everyone is in so in love with owning seperates, that they will buy them even though many are lacking desirable features just for the sake of owning seperates.

The detractors aren't considering the fact that this unit looks to be constructed like separates. I was amazed to read the posts on the new B&K gear. Their "new" gear does not have any of the new audio/video features that Denon, Pioneer, Yamaha, Onkyo, Integra are putting out. They are still behind the technology curve with only promised upgrades to potential buyers. I don't get it. What is the attraction of a new B&K without any of the latest HDMI capabilities and latest processing? Sorry, Gary M, but we disagree on any comparison with B&K.

In my case, if I add the cost of a new Denon 5308CI with the cost of a new Denon player with DenonLink to replace an existing Pioneer player with ILink, I have about the same cost as this new Pioneer receiver. To get the equivalent power amp/preamp from Anthem, Parasound or Denon, the cost will be $10-14K. This Pioneer receiver is positioned squarely in between these separates and the other flagship receivers, and comparisons with these alternatives is where this Pioneer will compete. Not any of the mid-line receivers, or mid-line prepros/amp combos, like Outlaw-Emotiva.

Just my 2c.

Is it just me or does the unit look like two separate pieces in which case it's pretty much a pre/pro amplifier combo. It's nice to see Pioneer playing in the big leagues again though. It's been so long since the 59TXi came out. I even remember a year or two ago when there were pictures going around on the net of a 59TXi with 3 or 4 HDMI inputs on the back panel. Of course it never came out. I have to imagine Pioneer went back to the drawing board and really wanted to knock one out of the park.

I really hope you're right!

I really wanted the last reference Elite model, but the lack of HDMI made me hesitate and get a used 74txvi to hold me over until the new one. I guess this is a good lesson in learning that sometimes patience is better than instant gratification.
