Testing a TV with different content.

I'm looking to buy a plasma or LCD at some point, hopefully soon. The reviews, and many threads on this forum, talk about how TV's perform with different types of content. I was curious if anyone knows the content format that is used in your standard big box stores? Anyone been able to ask a store to run a particular content over a particular TV to see how it performs? Any other ideas how to figure out how a TV would look in "real life," which for me would be HDTV from Comcast (I think they use 1080i) and, for the time being, DVD's on a "upgrading" player? Thanks.
