Glass shelves...bad?

I currently have a decent looking A/V stand with glass shelves. My center channel speaker sits on the top of it, directly under the wall mounted plasma. Some audiophiles have commented that the glass shelves are not good in regards to the center channel placement. I'm getting some new equipment and upgrading the a/v stand, so would I be doing a disservice to myself by getting something with a glass top shelf? And what about the modular racks that isolate each section...would that help? I suppose I could get wood or metal shelving, but I like the openess of glass.

Glass won't have any different effect than wood or metal.
