Wal-Mart has an HD DVD pamphlet showing off the Venturer player

Well, at least in Canada...

I stole this from a thread over in the software forum:

I went there today. Here is the display. Note the pamphlet on the top left.

And here is the Blu-ray side. Actually, Blu-ray gets three sides, as you can see.

Blu-ray gets an LCD, one wide side, and two short sides of the display.
HD DVD gets an LCD, one wide side, and no short sides of the display.

Yes, and the audio for the HD DVD side was much louder.

Unfortunately, the only HD DVD player (besides the 360 add-on) that this particular store sells right now is an RCA HDV5000, for CAD$449 (US$468).

What's up with this player? The Costco in Kitchener, Ontario Canada has this RCA HD-DVD player (this is essentially a rebadged Toshiba A-1 isn't it? ) for $499.

With A-2s going for under $200 in the U.S. surely these RCAs should be $150 or so. What is going to happen to these gen 1 machines?

I think they must just be leftover stock, and the local Wal-Marts simply don't know what to do with them. Personally I think they should just clear them out at $179. At that price somebody's bound to buy them, and then they can bring in the A2s or A3s for $199-249 for the holidays.

This pamphlet doesnt say its from walmart.

Although it would be great to hear that more players are available Toshiba has already surpassed the $299 price point originally expected for the low price chinese players. This player is currently at target for $249.

No it doesn't say it's from Wal-Mart. However, it's front and centre in the Wal-Mart electronics department in Canada.

It certainly would be interesting if they started selling it.

I don't know if they'd sell it, but Wal-Mart Canada often does stuff differently from Wal-Mart USA, Venturer's head office is nearby, and Wal-Mart does have a long history of selling Venturer products.

Personally, what I'd really like to see is the A2 for $198 (or at worst $248), and then the Venturer for $20-30 cheaper.

The Venturer should be not more that $149. Nobody's gonna buy it at $179 when they can get a Toshiba.

The MSRP in Canada for the A3 is $349 (US$366), so I wouldn't be surprised to see the A3 at Wal-Mart for something like $249 (US$261), with a Venturer at say $199 (US$209).

Yes, there have been $199 sales on the A2 in Canada, but after the sales the prices went back to MSRP or close to it.

The Venturer is already $249 at Target currently. I wonder if and when this pricing may be reduced to match the Toshiba value.
