I just bought the Venturer SHD7000 at WALMART

I was in my local Walmart for other reasons on my lunch hour, and there it was in the Electronics dept.

Apparently they got 5 in over the weekend, 2 were left (now 1)

Price: 199.97

Comes with 2 HD DVDs in the box (just says 2 HD DVDs included) - no specific titles.

I opened it, and in mine were

Rumor Has It (Combo)
The Perfect Storm

I will get pics up tonight, when I get home.

In the meantime, so no one calls BS on me...

Good find, let us know how it works out.

My first thought was:

I wonder if the HDA3 firmware updates work on this (Like the HDA1 firmware worked on the RCA player...)

Any particular reason(s) you elected to get this instead of a Toshiba player ? Since many Toshiba players can be had for less right now (even new), it would seem that price likely wasn't your motivating factor.

Cheapest you can get the Toshiba Player in Canada is $299, and that's when it's on sale (reg $349).

So yes, this player IS the cheapest solution here.

I bought it for a gift, but I'm going to run it though some tests first (as I think I'm the first one here to get my hands on one)

I think it's safe to say they'll come to the US:

And it's worth every cent. We just had our second child (born via emergency c-section) 2 weeks ago, and my wife was in the hospital for 4 days. My cost out of pocket? $0.

That said, leave the politics out of this. I'd like to discuss the player.

We definitely need a sound/video report.

I have a jackass in another forum that is calling the Venturer a "chinese piece of crap" when he has never even seen one.

Given that Venturer is based out of Markham, Ontario (about an hour drive from here) I would say that they'll be showing up at retail North America wide over the next few weeks.

The ship date on the label on mine was Nov 22.

But..but...but I was told at a web site these would sell for $249 and that even at that price Venturer would be breaking even.

You can't sell an HD DVD player for $199 and make a profit, or can you?

So...
Pics?
Build quality?
Remote design?
Menu design?
Functional similarity to the A3?
Firmware and easy of firmware update? Latest firmware?
Build date?

P.S. You might want to start an Owners' Thread.

I picked it up on my lunch hour, I'll get a review up with pics tonight and will start an official thread then. I'm stuck here for 4 more hours.

I would gladly pay those taxes for socialized medicine here in America! Big Michael Moore fan here. Enough with politics.....

Can you tell us how the load times are on these players?

If these are $199 in Canada, can we assume a $149 price here in the states?

199.97 CAD = 202.44 USD

Yes, but the MSRPs could be different. If the Canadian MSRP is $199, then I'd expect the US$ MSRP to be a bit lower, with possible pricing on sale closer to $149. That said, others had called Venturer way back and were told that it would be US$199 MSRP (despite Target's listed price).

P.S. Just as a reminder, here is Grubert's post comparing the Venturer SHD7000 to the Toshiba HD-A3:

5. On-screen menus

some box pics. It is clearly labeled that it has a SHARC Processer (Analog Devices) in it.

Rear panels look identicle to the A3, no S-Video.

If anyone's interested, there's a product page for it on Venturer's site:

http://www.venturer.com/products.aspx?view=423

And, they've got the user manual posted in pdf format:

With the new exchange rate the US price should be higher. One Canadian dollar equals 1.01 US dollars now.

That is obviously an A3 in with less spent on making the face pretty ( ok so the A3 is not that pretty but better looking than the Vent ) . I would bet the internals look almost identical .
