Official WWE in HD topic!

Apparently, the WWE will finally be rolling out a major pay-per-view event in high-definition some 12 months after UFC did the same. According to a tipster, Time Warner Cable (partly owned by Time Warner, parent company of AOL, which owns Engadget) is gearing up to offer the WWE Royal Rumble PPV event in HD when it airs on January 27, 2008. Of course, this shouldn't be too surprising considering that WWE was already planning to switch Smackdown to HD next month, but for fans of the sport, we're sure they'll be delighted to have the PPV matches in 1080i, too. We'll let you know if we hear anything official.

Smackdown is in HD on the CW its next show January 4th (the show is usually taped ahead of time so it will get the benefit of being edited beforehand) and RAW/ECW will both be in HD at some point in 2008 on USA/Sci Fi respectively. I cant get CW in HD yet..argh

Im kind of upset that at least for the first PPV they didn't drop the $10 HD Premium. $49.95 is a lot to spend for something that could ultimately be filled with glitches and production errors since it will be their first LIVE HD broadcast. I'll probably hold off until Wrestlemania but I fear they might try to charge $60 or even $70 for a 4 Hour Wrestlemania in HD.

Edit: Directv is offering the Rumble in HD according to their PPV sub site but its not available to order yet.

Smackdown is NOT HD yet. And there hasn't been an 'official' announcement that the 1/4 show will be the first (only strong indications that they would start in January)

Maybe it's a lot of the same audience?

It's like diapers are occasionally near the beer aisle in states without Blue Laws - those new fathers making late night trips to the store to buy diapers may be tempted to pick up a case of Bud if they see it there...

You might regret wishing for that. If you have seen it live you know how it exposes the fakeness of most of it. Still the higher profile wrestlers make it look more "real". They are better actors. An HD camera is going to expose it probably just like a live event. HD may actually hurt pro wrestling. Sort of like HD porn, do you really want to see how UGLY some of those women really are?

Wait, you're saying it's fake?! Geez, first Santa, then the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and now wrestling? Next you're going to tell me there's no gold at the end of rainbows....

I think he was talking about the women in porn, not wrestling...although the line is increasingly blurred between them...

Its no problem.. I think everyone in the world knows that wrestling is indeed fake. I also think everyone knows that the women are not that good looking in the first place.

McMahon who really didn't want to upgrade in the first place(he had his doubts, along with Bonnie over at USA about the move to HD)...already saw an episode in HD and approved. So I think it's going to be alright.

WWE has a very good production team.. and I can't wait to see how they do HD.

I think anybody who's not mentally retarded, knows it's not real. It's much like any other show on TV, it's not real, it has storylines and it's scripted.

Maybe wrestling going HD will get me back into it. I haven't watched Smackdown since 2003 and RAW since August 2006.

I haven't watched Smackdown much this year, and RAW on and off. I won't order the Royal Rumble PPV, but I will defintely order Wrestlemania.. it will be my first WWE PPV purchase since 2002. All because of HD.. isn't HD great

With RAW, ECW, and Smackdown getting the upgrade later.. I may even watch those shows more frequently.

Also.. does anyone know if this show will have 5.1 surround sound? Also, is there any word on if WWE will upgrade their tv show sets?

RAW has been so much better with Cena and the unstoppable reign of the 5 moves of doom on the bench. Sad to see Edge on Smackdown since we don't get CW in HD.

oh well , at least y2j is back

FWIW, looking ahead on the guide on my Directv HD-DVR to next week (January 7), RAW is listed as HD on the USA network.

That can't be right.. RAW hasn't launched in HD yet. WWE A.M. RAW is a catchup show for those who didn't watch RAW earlier in the week.

So how can A.M RAW be in HD.. unless tonights RAW is the first HD broadcast??

Good point...They may be using their HD cameras tonight but not broadcast the program in HD (one last dry run before broadcasting live in HD next week). They could then use the footage for their A.M. Raw program on Sunday.

No I am saying it will look even more fake. I think most adults and children already know its scripted apparently, except for you. Maybe you should try reading the post next time.

I think they know too. I think everyone knows its fake, but that is not the issue. In SD its looks real enough to still watch for the fans of it.... take that away and it could lose viewers. How will HD making the moves look even more rehearsed and fake "get you back into it"?

Maybe you should come back to the adult table when you get a sense of humor.

For now, get bent.

My personal opinion is that they aren't concerned about revealing anything important, mostly because they've been testing this for over a year now.

I'd say that WWE has one of the best production teams on television, and given that much time to tinker with equipment and angles, they've probably got a good handle on how they want to broadcast their product.
