Hey guys, a few questions about the Dish America (formerly TurboHD) packages. Are locals free now or do they charge $5 extra? Do these packages come with regional sports? If not, can they be added? Do you get a free receiver? Any hidden costs? Thanks.

I heard that the locals were now free, so I contacted Dish on a chat (I always like to have the written proof of any conversation) and asked to have the locals added if they were free. They turned them on within 15 minutes (both SD and HD). I never had them before because I use OTA and have my own recorders so it was rare that I really needed to record any locals or even watch them. Only reason I wanted them was when I do use the OTA to record it's nice to have the guide.

I just received my newest bill and no change in price as promised. I have the Dish Absolute package. I have seen posts on this and other forums where some didn't get the locals free for whatever reason, so the circumstances may be different for various packages. Or it could be the CSR crapshoot game all depending on who you talk to.

Some RSN's are included. The missing RSN's are available with the $5 sports pack (which is a total bargain during football season).

You get your local RSN included with everything above the Top 120. So you really only have (or need) the option to add it with the AT 120 (which is actually a specific package offering, called the "AT 120 +". Nice that they give the non-sports fans the choice if they want to keep the package price down. I'm one of those that only wants it certain times of the year myself - although you will normally get charged a $5.00 fee everytime you downgrade it).

Sources: Comcast In Talks with DISH, DirecTV About Philly RSN Carriage

FCC's terrestrial exemption rule change prompted talks

By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 7/28/2010 5:39:13 PM

Comcast is in talks with DirecTV and DISH about carriage of its regional sports net in Philly, according to sources familiar with those talks.

That does not come as a big surprise. Both satellite carriers formally asked for access to the RSN in the wake of the FCC's decision earlier this year that terrestrially delivered networks were not de facto excluded from complaints about access to distributor-owned programming (the so-called terrestrial exemption).

Comcast has long argued that it would make its Philly RSN available to satellite competitors, as it already does to cable and telco competitors--FiOS and RCN--when they make exclusive programming, like DirecTV's Sunday Ticket package of NFL games, available to Comcast. But the FCC's rule change prompted the talks.

A source said talks are ongoing, but that Comcast is still not inclined to make the programming available, and even if it does, not without conditions of carriage that would make it more palatable to the company.

A Comcast spokesperson had no comment. DISH and DirecTV spokespeople were not available for comment at press time.

I just received a call from Dish. They said they are discontinuing the Absolute package and I have to change to another.

They offered other packages at intro rates for 12mos and are including the Platinum (which is part of the Absolute) for 6 mos. No additional committment is being required.

Anyone else receive the same call?

Are you sure it was Dish calling? I haven't received any similar call.

Sometimes 3rd party resellers will call and try to get you to switch packages when you don't have to.

I've heard nothing that makes me think this package is going away from those who already have it.

It's legitimate. I called and confirmed it.

I called and after checking twice the agent stated currently there aren't any plans for it to be dropped (if you were grandfathered in). Of course how accurate that is only time will tell

It does appear funny they recently added locals to the package for free. Along with several other premium channels such as Epix1, Epix2, Retro, Indie, etc at no cost. If they were trying to keep the programming fees down why add them to the package.

I talked to a supervisor who confirmed it. She said I had to call a certain number which was the number they gave me to call back in the initial call from them. Everyone with Absolute was grandfathered in.

They added the channels you mentioned only because they were in the Platinum package which was integrated into Absolute from the start.

I think the timing is because the 2yr commitments for Absolute are now all expired as they quit selling it in Aug of 2008. Their offer isn't outrageous - far better than what I can get with D* or ConCast, but I really don't want to lose a couple of channels that are only in their highest packages which I absolutely won't pay for. If it weren't for the sports channels I'd drop the whole thing without hesitation. I have on OTA antenna and 2 HTPC's for recording and I could live with that easily.

What number did you call?

I'm not convinced that the number people have said is calling them (1-800-333-3474) is a Dish number anymore.

My latest bill and the Dish Web site have completely different numbers than that to call for new or existing customers.

I remember confusion years ago with someone else who had 888-333-3474 and was using that to scam customers into changing their Dish service.

My thinking is that maybe Dish finally dropped that old number and got new numbers to avoid that old confusion.

So... the question of the day is... did you call the phone number on your Dish Network bill (or their Web site) OR the one that showed up on your caller ID?

The 800-333-3474 picks up as Dish. Anyway, I called the Dish # on their site that I always use. I was given a callback number of 888-672-8452 from the initial call. When I talked to the supervisor at Dish, she said that the Absolute situation was being handled by another department and she gave me the same number.

I called my contact in the executive office and left a message, he called back from the 800-333-3474 number, but he had not heard about any changes to Absolute as of this morning, he's going to call me when and if he does.

I would 'wait and see'.

I have talked to the supervisor of installers here. We have a BIG dealer/installation co. here. He says it will work.

Need the info from someone who could possibly test or knows for sure.

Question: If I had a 722 and a round dish. Subing only to Turbo HD. Point the round dish at either 61.5 or 129(depending on my location) do a check switch and watch TV?

Thanks in advance.

Here is what I asked there...

"How many people in these 24 pages have actually gotten this phone call"?

The best I can tell, only 2. The op & 1 other.

"Thats what I thought also, at least as of now 3:00pm (Pacific)

The rest is the same bitchers and moaners of every other rumor, and 80% of these don't even have Absolute"

Of course there is nothing called Turbo HD, but if you were alluding to HD services, yes it would work. National HD channels are on 61.5, 77 and 129. I am assuming that your round dish is a 300 dish and has but one LNB. Keep in mind that many HD channels are on 77 and not on 61.5. 129 has them all, provided that they are national channels.

Got that. But will I be bothered by no signal on 110/119 banners? That would suck.

I wondered about the HD Absolute rumors so I contacted ceo@echostar.com . I didn't get an e-mail reply, they immediately called me on the telephone! The rumor is true. They have set off a firestorm with this change. I will be dumping Dish (a long term customer since April 1997) and will be going the blu-ray Netflix and internet streaming route. With the tonight show now on-line at johnnycarson.com (the system is crashing due to significant response) I decided that I won't take the Dish decision lying down and just accept it...
