Philips 120Hz 2ms 7403/7603 Series Discussion
So Philips introduced a new set of 7000-series TVs at CES this year:
http://www.ces.philips.com/press_release_7000tv.html 120Hz panel, 2 ms response time, 4 HDMI 1.3a ports, and a new speaker system with integrated subwoofer. I was a day or two from pulling out the credit card for a 42PFL7432D/37 at Best Buy when they were on sale a couple weeks ago, now I'm glad I waited! The 42PFL7403 (or 7603 if you feel Ambilight is worth $100) look like the sets to beat, IMO. Has anyone seen these in person (CES attendees, daveinga, etc)? Anyone else have thoughts on them? Info's a little scarce on the web since they're so new, but I did find this: http://ces.cnet.com/8301-13855_1-9843969-67.html http://gizmodo.com/tag/philips-7403/ Last edited by Oneota; 01-21-08 at 04:35 PM.. |

Since they're not out 'til March, I'm guessing finding dimensions will be a little tough for the next month or so, unless someone from Philips (hint, hint, daveinga
) wanted to chime in.[Edit: There's some more info here: http://www.designcollection.philips.com/ ] Last edited by Oneota; 01-25-08 at 01:54 PM.. |

Also, I didn't see any mention of the improved sound system (with integrated subwoofer) in the 5000 series. In other words, the two share a similar cabinet, but that's about it. ![]() |

The 7000 series certainly sounds interesting, but I haven't seen any contrast ratio number, which is kind of worrying. If the contrast ratio was much better than on the current models, Philips would probably have included it in the press releases (or did I just miss it?).

As I remember it black to white transitions take a lot more time and are a lot more relevant to real world content. Black to white transitions actually involve going from full white or transparent to full black which takes longer for the individual cells to do. Gray to gray is merely a refreshing of the current state and involves far less actual activity by hte cell itself. So for example a bird against the blue sky or a red race car driving around a track at high speed would all benefit from a higher black to white response time and would not benefit nearly as much from a gray to gray response time because there is no true color transition taking place with the gray to gray. |

The Philips that is out now has 5ms and very little motion blur, but the blacks, atleast to me did not seem that good. Who knows what the contrast will be on this tv? |

Well if the Contrast Ratio is good and the blacks ; dont have to be as good as samsungs but a little close then plus 120hz(which i bet is better than Samsung) 2ms, 42" 1080p, awesome Desgin and a really Low price ( atleast i think so) then i'm taking this 42" over the 40" 71f

Well I was at BB today (Vancouver BC) and the Philips 42" 1080p LCD TV (42PFL7432D/37) appeared to be on the way out. There were only a couple in stock, and when I asked the salesman about it he told me the way to tell if something is being fazed out is to look at the price, if it ends in a 5 or a 7 it is EOL'd (ie: $1399.95). Hopefully this means new models are on the way.

I think I am holding off on buying an XBR4 until I see what these new sets will offer. IMO, the Sony's 8ms panel is way too slow for a top of the line TV. The XBR4 may have 120 HZ, but I think that is only to compensate for the slowness of the panel. I have looked at panels with 6ms, 5ms, and 4ms response times and they all appear to handle motion better than any of the 8ms panels, including the Sonys.
This new Philips line seems to be approaching the Holy Grail of LCD panels. With a 2ms response time, 120HZ processing, along with the Ambilight feature, this set will be hard to beat in my opinion. I have been looking for an LCD set with little or no motion blur or artifacts for the past month and I have concluded that this set does not yet exist. The Samsung 5271 that I had for a few days came close in this regard, but the reflective screen was a horrible thing to include on an LCD set. The blacks were fantastic on this TV but I could also see my reflection in those blacks. Hopefully, we will see these sets in stores in April and May as stated and not September and October. Right now, I just have a wall mount with no TV. I'm not sure how long I can wait. |
