SUPER BOWL XXXIX Among Regular and Postseason Highlights

FOX Sports Becomes First Network to Present Up To 6 Games Each Week in HD

2004 Preseason Schedule Features Thursday and Friday

Prime Time Games on August 19 and 27

The 2004 NFL on FOX season, one that will culminate with the live presentation of SUPER BOWL XXXIX, premieres Sunday, Sept. 12 with doubleheader coverage of seven games, highlighted by Joe Gibbs’ return to the Redskins’ sidelines when Washington hosts Tampa Bay, and Bill Parcells’ Dallas Cowboys against the Minnesota Vikings. In total, FOX Sports broadcasts a 111-game regular season slate, including nine doubleheader Sundays, the traditional Thanksgiving Day game and two special late-season non-Sunday national broadcasts. Each week, coverage begins with FOX NFL SUNDAY (12:00-1:00 PM ET/9:00-10:00 AM PT), America’s most watched pregame show for ten straight years, starring co-hosts James Brown and Terry Bradshaw, and analysts Howie Long and Jimmy Johnson.

FOX Sports’ 2004 NFL regular and postseason broadcast schedule boasts an unprecedented presentation of high definition programming. Beginning Sept. 12, the network will present up to six games in 720p high definition every week during the regular season. In addition, all nationally televised regular and postseason games, including the NFC Championship Game and SUPER BOWL XXXIX, will be offered in the 720p (progressive) high definition format, which takes 60 razor sharp, complete pictures per second, producing spectacular moving images. No other network has ever produced as many as six NFL games in HD on the same day.

The NFL on FOX’ eleventh season boasts 64 games featuring last season’s playoff teams, including: the Seattle Seahawks (13); the NFC Champion Carolina Panthers (12); the NFC North champion Green Bay Packers (11); the NFC East champion Philadelphia Eagles (10); the NFC West champion St. Louis Rams (10); and the Dallas Cowboys (10). FOX’ 2004 schedule also includes 12 games featuring the Washington Redskins’ crusade for the Lombardi Trophy, back under the direction of the last man to lead the storied franchise to glory, head coach Joe Gibbs.

Once the playoff teams are determined, the NFL on FOX presents exclusive live postseason coverage, including: an NFC Wild Card Game on Sunday, Jan. 9; the NFC Divisional Playoffs, Saturday, Jan. 15 and Sunday, Jan. 16; the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, Jan. 23 and culminates with SUPER BOWL XXXIX on Sunday, Feb. 7 from ALLTEL Stadium in Jacksonville, FL.

This season’s NFL on FOX coverage again kicks off with three regular-season NFL Europe League contests in June leading up to World Bowl 2004, the league’s championship game, Saturday, June 12 (12:00 PM ET), live from Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

The NFL on FOX’s 2004 preseason schedule features Jeremy Shockey and the re-tuned New York Giants against the NFC Champion Carolina Panthers, led by former Giant defensive coordinator John Fox, on Thursday, August 19 (8:00 PM ET), live from Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte. Eight days later on Friday, August 27 (8:00 PM ET), Joe Gibbs and the Washington Redskins visit Marshall Faulk and the defending AFC West Champion St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.

David Hill and Ed Goren are the Executive Producers of the NFL on FOX. Bill Brown is Senior Producer. Scott Ackerson is the Coordinating Producer of FOX NFL SUNDAY.

Following is a complete list of games on the 2004 NFL on FOX regular and postseason broadcast schedules:

Lets hope they don't capture at 720i and deinterlace like they did with widescreen. :p Just kidding.

This is great.... as long as every Eagles game on Fox is HD (though I am mourning the fact I will have to endure 720p, I wish CBS still did the NFC). The "up to" part makes me nervous a bit. I suppose that has to do with other special events which would interfere with truck rentals and travel times.

They would at least have to have 6 trucks. 32 teams in the league. I think it is safe to assume MNF and SNF is HD again. That means 12 teams on Fox, 4 teams on ESPN/ABC. So 16 teams, half the league, a week (if up to =6) without even factoring what CBS will do.

Good stuff! :D

Are these games shown only regionally OTA, or can we expect ALL of them on Sunday Ticket through D*? Any guesses.

I never thought I would say this.........WAY TO GO FOX! You are Faux no more!
Uh-uh, you don't get off that easy. All those that have spent the better part of the last three years castrating - and castigating - FOX are not allowed to watch any NFL HD games this season. That is your penance for ever doubting that FOX would eventually get with the program. :D

Seriously, people like foxeng and some other FOXies took a lot of abuse in these parts, despite their claims that change was coming. Many people said FOX - and specifically Rupert Murdoch - would never offer true HD because they were so strongly anti-HD. There's a lot of crow cooking around the country right about now. This is great news. And if they'll all be carried on NFLST, it's time to pre-order.

Read the HDTV Programming Synopsis; no guessing is necessary.

Eddy Hartenstein, Vice Chairman of The DIRECTV Group, was publicly quoted at CES as saying 1/2 of NFL ST games would be in HDTV this season.

Realistically, it could be more.

I remember reading that, but if I listened to everything they said, I'd be watching my HDTiVo by now. Hope the launch goes well......

I was busting at the gut to say something since the rumors have been floating for a over a month and there were some "unofficial official" announcements made under the table, but if you have noticed, I had been very quiet on it. I knew if I said ANYTHING, the paranoia would get to me! I must admit I did let it slip a little earlier today. In another thread people were complaining about no HD MLB and I made a comment would they give up MLB in HD for all HD NFL. Then not 3 hours later the announcement comes out. Luck is everything!

From what I have heard, FOX will be able to uplink 3 720p games in the bandwidth that CBS has to use for one game. I think that is why it is 6 games. There will be one game every so often when FOX has 7 games that one will be SD just because of that so don't bug me too much! :) But I would guess the bottom feeder of bottom feeders gets that slot! I am sure CBS has figured all this out when FOX announced the bit splicer and how FOX was going to use ATSC compliant streams. It will be interesting to see how CBS deals with this, if they stay with 2 games a week or go more. From what I understand, if they stay with the current HD uplink bandwidth to go more, they will be at max bandwidth quickly.

In any case, it is going to be VERY interesting this football season. HHHMM, time to start the sausages and get the pop corn popping for opening day in September!

Thanks sangs and everyone else who either publicly or privately believed in FOX. As I have said many times before, when FOX makes up their mind to do something, they go all out. If they can find a way to make a dollar with it, they go after it. For the 9 years my station has been an O & O, that has ALWAYS been the case. FOX is frugal as hell with the money, but when they say go, THEY MEAN GO!

(Thank God this over!)

I read that today and was wondering what you meant! I wish now that I would have asked. Oh, well...next time.

I'm in Cleveland and we are a Fox O & O station. Do you know if all O & O's will upgrade to 5.1 sound? Currently, we do not have 5.1 and I would love to see them upgrade by Sept.

Thanks,

Jim

Forgive me, because I'm not a tech person, but does this mean that CBS would be incapable of uplinking that many games on one day, or that it would be 3x more expensive?

EDIT>> Ken?...anyone else?... that can answer this question. (Sorry to put a CBS question in the middle of FOX's glory, but foxeng is a Carolina fan, and he may be mad at us Pats fans!)

All FOX affiliates that offer HDTV will also offer DD 5.1. The Splicer technology eliminates the need for a Dolby encoder at the local stations.

I was thinking how Fox's delivery system would be very good for this a couple weeks back. More consistent feeds to viewers too. Since we'll only get a feed at the ATSC rate it is probably a blessing that our locals don't have to encode the signals (so we don't get cases like how certain ABC affiliates had problems with the NBA finals last year).

I assume this might be noticed for BUD users though, right? Or do they get a 19 mbps feed like OTA/Cable.

This is great news and to say the least I am shocked. Foxeng I guess we all owe you an apology for always doubting you and giving you such a hard time. I have to admit if I were you I would have left here a long time ago. I have always enjoyed your posts and look forward to many more from you.
