ELAC Adante Speakers at CEDIA 2017

ELAC Adante

At CEDIA 2017 in San Diego, Andrew Jones and ELAC showed off the final, ready to ship iteration of the Adante line that was first announced at CES 2017. This speaker line includes the AS-61 standmount ($2500/pair), the AC-61 center channel ($2000), AF-61 floorstander ($5000/pair), and the AS-W121 dual-opposed subwoofer ($2500). Additionally, ELAC has tweaked the dedicated stands for the standmounts and center ($600/pair & $400 respectively) by changing the aluminum base plate to steel, for maximum rigidity. This is a high-end, high-performance offering that should appeal to both the two-channel and AV/surround-sound crowd.

When I last heard Adante, it was in Las Vegas and Andrew was showing off something akin to a prototype, and even that sounded glorious. But now the speakers, stands, and the sub are finalized, and preparing to ship. The 3-way speakers feature an innovative design that mates a 2-way concentric tweeter/midrange with a novel design for the bass driver. Namely, the “woofer” you see is actually a passive driver, the active driver is sealed within the cabinet and within its own specially-designed double chamber.

AVS Forum Editor Scott Wilkinson discusses the details of that bass driver arrangement in this post, where he also describes a demo of the towers. Therefore, I won’t go into the bass driver design here. Suffice to say that the Adantes have earned rave reviews wherever they’ve been demoed. Indeed, the buzz is such that there is a sense these speakers approach the fidelity of cost-no-object offerings. If true, are there many folks out there who would be surprised that it was Andrew Jones who made it possible? I’m guessing not.

At this point in the game, my primary interest is getting my hands on a 5.1 Adante system and hooking it up to some clean, powerful amplification and a high-quality AV processor. I have a few options in that regard, and if things works out I should get my chance to hear what a focus on the fidelity of each speaker in a minimalist (5.1) surround-sound system can do for the listening experience. Quality over quantity? It’s fun to find out.
