Lifestyle-centric wireless speaker systems have caught on as a convenient way to enjoy tunes from the vast streaming libraries available through various Internet services. The key to a great lifestyle streaming speaker design include a compact form factor, high-quality audio, and flexible connectivity options. ELAC’s Discovery Series Z3, announced at CEDIA 2017, appears to possess all of these qualities.
The Discovery Series Z2 is a stereo device that offers 140 watts of total system power. This is divided between dual 4″woofers (50 watts per driver) and dual 1″ soft-dome tweeters (20 watts each). In this design, bass output is augmented by dual 4″ passive radiators.
Unlike some lifestyle speaker systems (ahem, Sonos) the Z3 does not depend on a network to run, although connecting it to a network offers many streaming benefits. But, it is also compatible with Bluetooth and it has a stereo 3.5 mm input that work regardless of whether or not there is Wi-Fi access.
When you do connect it to a network, you’ll find that the Discovery Z3 supports the Discovery Music Server, is Roon Ready, has AirPlay, and features Spotify Connect
streaming. And when used with ELAC’s Discovery Music Server, the Z3 acts as an endpoint
“The Discovery Z3 not only delivers an exceptional audio experience, but also simplifies one of the biggest problems with Wi-Fi enabled speakers, the setup process. Our companion iOS and Android application make connecting the speaker to your Wi-Fi network as easy as connecting a Bluetooth speaker,” said Chris Walker, vice president of product development, ELAC. “This wireless speaker gives custom installers and consumers a great option for delivering outstanding sound performance in a wide variety of home-based applications.”
This ELAC Discovery Series Z3 has an MSRP of $500 and contains the knowledge plus wisdom of Andrew Jones, one of the all-time great speaker designers and will ship in October 2017.
