Hi - I'm really hopeful that someone here can provide an answer for me. We currently have basic cable and a Panasonic DMR-E85H DVR. We are considering getting Direct TV.

Direct TV tells me that I would have to purchase their "DVR service package" for an additional $6/month in order to get the "full functionality" of my DVR with the Direct TV service.

It's not clear to me why I would need to purchase a SERVICE from them, to use with my DVR that has worked just fine with my cable signal for several years. If I DON'T purchase their "dvr service" package at the additional monthly fee, will I lose the ability to use my DVR? Will it still work to play and record, but NOT give me the on-screen TV guide programming capabilities? Will it not record at all?

The manual shows a setup option with an input from the a "cable tv box/satellite receiver" to L3 input. So.... do I really need their "service charge"?

Thanks for any guidance!

You will still be able to use it but you'll have to set all the timers manually on the DVR, and also set the timers on the Direct tuner to change channels.

You will need to run the Direct tuner into a line input (L3) on the recorder to do this.

In other words, you won't be able to use the TV Guide on Screen feature of the E85H anymore (it doesn't work with satellite, only cable and over the air).

That's probably what they mean by "full functionality".

You will get some guide data from them with their tuner, and you can just go by that when you want to set manual timers on the recorder. But they will give you the first, non-DVR tuner free with their service - you certainly don't need their DVR to do the above (and the service charge that would accompany it).

So it all depends on whether you mind setting manual timers to record or not.

(Of course, if you're upgrading to HD service, you won't be able to record and playback in full resolution with the E85H.)
