I bought a TIVO DVR extender from Weaknees. The unit is a Seagate 500 gig hard drive inside a box. After about six months, the unit died.

I called Weaknees and they informed me that it was no longer under their warranty (90 days) but was warrantied by Seagate. I sent the unit to Seagate and they sent it back, unrepaired. I then called Weaknees and they gave me some information to resend the unit to Seagate. Seagate sent it back again, unrepaired.

Seagate will NOT remove their hard drive from the Weaknees case. The Seagate repair policy regarding the Weakness product is that the consumer is to remove the Seagate hard drive from the case and detatch all associated electronics and send ONLY the hard drive to Seagate for repair. The consumer then is responsible for reassembling the unit.

To me, Weaknees has engaged in false advertising by telling consumers that the unit has a two year warranty. It does not, the unit warranty is 90 days.

In any case, I threw the thing in the garbage -- my Western Digital external hard drive just arrived. It is warrantied by WD and they do the full repair in case of failure.

Needless to say, neither Seagate or Weaknees will ever see another penny of my business.

Their disk crashed after six months. In such a case, I would think that they would go out of their way to soothe the consumer. They did not though they were very pleasant to deal with.

being pleasant is always a good thing...

however, i see why they (seagate) wouldn't do it for you... if you had your neighbor down the street install a seagate drive for you in your laptop, would you expect to be able to send your entire laptop into them to swap the hard drive for you? it's the same thing. they don't want to be mucking around swapping out hard drives. #1, they'd have to pay people to do it and #2, what if it comes back to you and the box itself fails?

wayyyyy to many headaches for a drive manufacturer to deal with... seagate is VERY VERY good with their warrantees... but they'd be foolish to allow themselves sucked into the scenario you want....

Why not go after Weaknees? I would. I would call my credit card company and have the charges reversed if possible.

Now if it was a Seagate product (like a Segate external hard drive) then sure you would send the whole thing in.

If this was a hard drive in a computer you would not send the entire computer to Seagate.

You would be required to pull the hard drive your self and send it in.

BTW: They do not "repair" hard drives, they simply replace them with another "recertified" drive.

I have sent hard drives to Seagate and found their return service to be very fast.

WOW I just looked at the Weakknees site and you got ripped off!

They are charging $200 for a 500GB non DVR certified drive.

You can get the 500GB Western Digital Tivo certified DVR expander for less.

Matter of fact Tiger Direct has them for $129.00

A 'phile and his money are soon parted...

what a waste... could've just given it away to somebody, anybody.

5 minutes with a screw driver x2 times, a quick test report and rma with seagate and they would've had a nice external drive for whatever their needs.
