On a dvd/vcr combo, JVC claims upconversion to near HD quality for the dvd as well as the vcr. Both send output to the HDTV via a single HDMI cable. Sony also seems to claim upconversion for both. Another, Toshiba, claims near HD upconversion for the dvd only. Can vcr output from a tape be upconverted to approximately 1080p? If not, can the tape be dubbed to a dvd and then the output from the dvd recorder upconverted?

You might want to take this to the DVD Recorders forum, not much traffic here. But I would suspect that what you say is true (your recorded DVD will be upconverted), although VHS blown up is still gonna look like crap.

I have an up converting DVD player.

The up converted picture quality is better than standard DVD but no where near HD quality.

I am guessing the same would apply for any up converting.

A 'phile and his money are soon parted...
