I want to hang myself. I capture some stuff from TV that I know won't be released on Blu-ray, such as Saturday Night Live, and I use Apple's AVCVideocap in the Firewire SDK 2.6. Up until a week or so ago it was working, although it was hit and miss: sometimes it would capture flawlessly and sometimes it would capture pure garbage. It was a matter of keep trying over and over until it got it right.
But then one day the AVCVideoCap software started doing something weird. Before this happened, the normal procedure for recording was to press the "Capture from device" button. A Save As dialog would open, I would navigate to the proper folder, type in a name, click Save, and then another dialog would slide down allowing me to set the amount of time I wanted to record.
Since this problem started, when I click on Save As, nothing happens. The second dialog doesn't slide down, and if I click on the "Capture from device" button again, the capture status field changes to "Could not open device".
This is very frustrating for me. I tried reinstalling Mac OS X, both 10.4 and 10.5, and it's still the same.
Now, I could get an old hard drive and put it in my Windows PC and maybe install Win XP with those old drivers for Windows, but I remember that when I tried that the captured footage was full of visual crap, pixels appearing all over the place randomly. Has anybody come up with a good solution for firewire capturing on Windows, or even Linux? I'm open to anything as long as I can capture TV shows from my DVR via firewire.
And, if anyone came up with a solution for the AVCVideoCap problem, please share.
I have had the same problem in AZ. All of the sudden about a month ago it stopped working for me as well.
What was your setup when it took a crap. I am running a 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro with 4 GB and Leopard 10.5.6, I think I was running 10.5.5 when it stopped working.
In Virginia with Comcast. Hint to the wise - use VLC streaming/ exporting wizard in the File menu to save to file!!! It works - can't schedule it, though
