I'd like to cancel cable and will need something like the DTVPal DVR for use with a Sony Wega CRT from 2004-ish (HD-ready, has HDMI input). I'd like a dual-tuner DVR appliance.

So far, all I've found is the DTVPal DVR. There seem to be other devices that come close, but lack some key feature (second tuner, EPG, etc).

Am I missing a competing device?

TiVoHD (with lifetime subscription, if you don't want to have monthly fees) - if you want something that actually works, and works well.

Not cheap like the Pal DVR, but in the case of both, and any other solution for that matter, you get what you pay for.

(The TiVoHD's only $199.99 at Sears right now.)

Yeah, I thought about another Tivo (already have a "lifetime" Series2 sitting unused in a closet), but paying for a listing service I can get free elsewhere (embedded in OTA signals) just doesn't sit well with me.

The DTVPal DVR and the TivoHD are the only dual-tuner OTA DVRs available.

The free PSIP information offered by broadcasters is typically limited to 24-72 hours, and is not always reliable -- for now, at least, it's not something you really want to depend on in a DVR. Dish Network licensed the commercial TVGOS service for the DTVPal DVR; the cost of that information is factored into the price and feature set of the product.

Last year, TiVo allowed customers to transfer lifetime from their Series2 to the TivoHD for $199. Unfortunately, no such transfer offers are currently running.
