I hooked up an 80G external drive to my dvr and I formatted and rebooted the dvr and now it shows 48% instead of 63% used..
it obviously is using the drive.. but if the dvr has an 80G and I added an 80G why did I only get a 15% increase in space..

The typical capacity on the 8300HD is 160GB. Some older models may have less.

63% of 160GB = 100.8GB used
100.8GB used / (160+80GB) = 42% used

As to why your box reports 48% used instead of 42% or less, I couldn't say.

Do they have a space reservation for their Live TV buffer like TiVos do? That might explain the discrepancy.
