If I upgrade to HD service with DirectV but keep my HR10-250, can anyone tell me what the issues are? I know that the HR10-250 does not support the latest encryption technology but I like it. What channels will I not be able to get at all what channels will I not be able to get in HD? Are there any other issues that I need to consider?
DirecTV now uses MPEG-4 for its HD channels. The HR10-250 (released in 2004) doesn't support MPEG-4, and therefore doesn't support DirecTV's HD channels. If activated with DirecTV, it supports HD locals from an off-air antenna, but that's about it.
If you want a HDTV DVR for DirecTV, you need to get the HR2x with DirecTV's own DVR software. DirecTV also plans to offer a new HDTV DVR with the TiVo software, but that is some months off.
I switched out my hr10-250 only because it couldnt pick up the locals in HD over sat and as I remember it also wouldnt pick up the premium movie channels, also mp4 format. I loved the tivo cause it could record the local channels OTA via antenna, but the signal was sometime weak.
