Although I know it won't be true HD, I'm looking to record off my cable [RCN-nyc] box since it tends to fill up quickly & would like to record stuff like talk shows that doesn't need to be in HD but I'd like to at least record it anamorphic since my cable box only outputs this through the component outputs [of course it would be great if I could just connect an eSata external HDD to my cable box but my cable co. wont allow it]

From my limited research it looks like the Archos TV+ has component inputs and for an average of $150 its not too bad a price... the Tivo HD does'nt seem to have any inputs on it, I've seen some DVD recorders that have component inputs but they seem to be very rare....

I'm not finding a lot of information about this unit (Google gives a link to the manufacturer's site, which is dead, and the cache doesn't have useful info; links to other sites like C|Net and Amazon link to info, but they don't really answer all my questions). There is Hauppauge's 1212 HD-PVR unit, but it runs about $300, and has to connect to a computer to do its work (it doesn't have a hard drive of its own).

Pretty much all DVD recorders have gone the way of the dodo, and DVRs like the TiVo HD and Moxi don't have component ins, no. Many DVRs that did this in the past, like the old Tivo Series2 models, have decided that recording from video-ins like that is suboptimal, mostly because the necessary IR blasters are finicky - if they're in the wrong place, they don't work, they can fall unless they're well-secured, you have to know a lot of info about the model of device you're connected to to get a database of IR commands, they tend to be very sensitive about timing of commands, etc.

If you want a modern, HD-capable, standalone DVR, this is probably not going to be a feature you're going to find.
