I am looking for a set top DVR/PVR that will allow me to record shows and then export them to my PC for conversion to another format. I am a using a cable provider. I want to stay away from the following ...

Tivo - I have looked at Tivo but the monthly service fee is too expensive for me. Plus I am not sure which content is prevented from being exported.

PC/Mac DVR - I have used a home built PC based PVR in the past but it was a chore maintaining it and dealing with system crashes etc ..

I live in the U.S.A. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Well since you have already said no to the simple solutions you are not leaving much to deal with.

Probably the only thing right off the top of my head would be the Hauppauge PVR.

If your cable box has component video outputs.

A 'phile and his money are soon parted...
