I have the hauppauge as well for the same exact reason, to record gameplay off the xbox and ps3 and it was an extreme pain to setup. I have gone through 3 converters that have been utter garbage so far that would randomly drop signal or cause the colors to be messed up in the game.
So before I get into everything let me tell you the 'quick fix' that might work for you since Im assuming when you say it doesnt work it means you are not getting any picture?
I find that when you reconnect everything to the 'hopper' and you get no video there are a few steps that fix it:
1. make sure all cables are plugged in (of course
2. close out of the PVR software on your pc
3. unplug the usb to the hopper from your pc
4. unplug power to the hopper
5. startup the PVR software
6. plug the hopper back into your pc via usb
7. plug the power to the hopper back in.
After 30 seconds or so you should be golden. (note that the gaming system should be ON this entire time)
Assuming that doesnt work we are going to need more details on how you have each device connected and what it is connected to.
Note - When everything is setup correctly only the video feed to the PVR software will be delayed, you should not see any delays on the TV
